UNM football player charged in assault

A UNM football player has been arrested and charged with assault after a confrontation in the dorms.

Andre McQueen was arrested Feb. 27 and charged with assault on a household member.

McQueen has been suspended from playing and from attending all football-related events, said Greg Remington, spokesman for the Athletics Department.

"He was suspended immediately once coach (Mike) Locksley was made aware of the incident," he said. "Until all information has been gathered and there is some kind of conclusion on the case, it will remain that way, and at which time we will determine if he will be able to rejoin the team."

Remington said that whatever the outcome, there still is no guarantee that McQueen will be allowed to rejoin the team.

McQueen is accused assaulting his girlfriend. He allegedly hit her on the left side of the face after she pushed him, according to a police report. She had found him in his room with another woman, the report states.

A UNM Police officer responded to the scene at Redondo Village but did not witness an altercation.

Witnesses told the officer that they did not see an assault either but that they heard screaming coming from McQueen's room, according to the report.

The officer arrested McQueen that night and took him to the APD Prisoner Transport Center, where he was processed without incident, the report states.

The woman involved did not wish to press charges at the time of the incident, according to the police report.

McQueen is scheduled to be arraigned today.
