Suspicious package at UNM dental clinic proves to be benign

UNM police have given the all clear regarding a potential bomb threat at the UNM dental residency clinic Friday morning.

UNMPD Public Information Officer Lieutenant Tim Stump said the police department received a call at 10:23 a.m. from someone at the dental clinic. The caller said a person left a backpack outside of the building and rode off on their bicycle on a nearby bike path.

A Lobo alert notification was sent out at approximately 11:15 a.m.
The situation outside of the building at 1801 Camino de Salud ended around 12:45 p.m., after APD bomb techs inspected the backpack and declared the area safe.

The dental residency clinic, the nearby UNM Child Care Center and the Q-lot parking lot were evacuated and kept clear throughout the ordeal.

Stump said UNMPD detained the owner of the backpack. He said the owner was very cooperative with police, and was released shortly after.

“You can never be too cautious and we take every incident like this real serious,” Stump said.
