The Albuquerque Fire Department responded to a “bush fire” in the area in front of George Pearl Hall late Friday afternoon.
AFD public information officer Melissa Romero said authorities, who arrived at the scene at about 4:30 p.m., were able to contain the petite blaze in about 15 minutes. She said the incident was “nothing major,” and that the building, which houses UNM’s architecture department, was not harmed.
Police was not able to identify how exactly the incident came about, Romero said.
The burning bushes filled the segment of Central Avenue in which the building was located with smoke. At about 4:50 p.m., at least one fire truck was still spraying water into the bushes.
Romero said that although the fire happened on campus property, the incident was not arson. The department does not plan to conduct further investigation on the bush fire.
