ASUNM Community Experience will host its 12th annual campus cleanup event, Fall Frenzy 2014, on Friday.

Fall Frenzy campus cleanup tomorrow

ASUNM Community Experience will host its 12th annual campus cleanup event, Fall Frenzy 2014, on Friday. Fall Frenzy takes place annually before the homecoming football game as an effort to help beautify the campus before the weekend festivities.

According to the Community Experience’s website, a number of campus projects have been planned, including planting flowers, laying mulch, planting trees and generally beautifying UNM’s campus.

Participation is on a volunteer basis. 200 to 300 people are expected to attend this year’s clean up..

Check-in is at 9 a.m. at the Cactus Garden across from the Duck Pond by Zimmerman Library. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., volunteers will report to various sites around UNM for their designated projects. Lunch, games, prizes and a raffle drawing will be provided as part of a celebration picnic.

Heavy traffic expected during ‘Wicked’ run

Heavy traffic caused by Popejoy’s production of “Wicked” is expected on UNM’s main campus from Sept. 17 to Oct. 5. According to UNM, all “Wicked” attendees will be directed to park in either G Lot, the Cornell Visitor Structure or the Yale Parking Structure.

Anyone parking or driving on campus near those areas are encouraged to seek an alternate route two hours before and two hours after each presentation.

Wicked” attendees should arrive early for the show, andshould allow extra time for parking.

UNM Art Museum open for ‘Wicked’ this weekend

The UNM Art Museum will be open during the opening weekend of “Wicked” Saturday and Sunday. Show goers can visit the museum before the show and during intermission.

Live 3-D chalk painting artist on campus

Denver artist Chris Carlson will be on campus to create a 3-D chalk drawing at the Duck Pond Tuesday and Wednesday. According to UNM, the installation will be open to the public to view as he goes through the creative process.

According to his website chriscarlsonart.com, Carlson and his company 3-D Designs specialize in creating three dimensional works of art for clients of all types. His preferred mediums are paint, pastel chalk and graphite.

UNM celebrates 125 years with tribute film

A UNM film tribute will be shown on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s Bank of America Film Theater. According UNM, the film was created by Aracely Chapa, a filmmaker with the UNM Libraries Center for Regional Studies. The film chronicles UNM’s 125 year history and its future through memories of UNM alumni, faculty, administrators, staff and the community.

UNM Libraries receives grant to digitize newspapers

The UNM College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences has received a supplemental award of $220,000 from the National Endowment for the Humanities to digitize 100,000 newspaper pages, the University announced. 200,000 pages have already been scanned as part of a project by the Nation Digital Newspaper Program.

The pages will be available at the Library of Congress website, Chronicling America. The New Mexico newspapers, originally published from 1852 to 1922, in English and Spanish, are fully searchable.
