Letter: Walkers, drivers alike should take care on the road

Editor,

The reason I wanted to write this article in the Daily Lobo is to wake both drivers and pedestrians up. Let’s all be on high alert when crossing busy roads instead of in our prevalent auto-pilot mode. The life you save may be your own. Pedestrians — do not be lulled by the “safety” of crosswalks. Remember, you can die in the right of way.

After a day of classes earlier this semester, my brother and I, as we so often do, crossed University Boulevard on Las Lomas Road in the crosswalk with the pedestrian light.

But this day the unthinkable happened: A jeep from the campus side of Las Lomas turned left onto University and nearly plowed right into me. By the time I saw the jeep (it was approaching me from behind), it was only inches away from me. Much too late for me to dance out of the way.

The next thing that happened was that I was on my posterior near the island. Fortunately, I was sideswiped by dumb luck instead of getting run over by the jeep head on. It is now a week and a half later and while I still have a cut on my leg, as well as black and blue and soreness, I count myself lucky.

Sincerely,

Doug Schwartz
