Editor,
By canceling Darwin Day at our state-run Museum of Natural History, the New Mexico government has capitulated one more time to its base of religionists, this time running interference in the guise of Intelligent Design.
But what did you expect? Any number of New Mexicans going with scriptural literalism think of natural history as a farce. Is it not they who have ensured that our totally scientific museum is under the state’s Department of Cultural Affairs, like natural history that is based on paleontology with evolution as its purely scientific theoretical basis is just another aspect of culture, and therefore can be argued away on the basis of social values espoused by New Mexicans?
Sincerely,
