Sports briefs for April 6

Baseball

After taking the first game on the road against San Diego State, UNM dropped the final two games of the three-game series.

In the rubber match, the Lobos made a late run at the Aztecs, but two runs in the top of the ninth wasn’t enough for New Mexico.

Freshman pitcher Tyler Stevens fell to 1-3 on the season, going 5.2 innings and allowing two earned runs. Sophomore Preston Ryan also gave up two runs to the Aztecs in just two innings of work.

SDSU’s 4-1 lead heading into the top of the ninth proved to be just enough to dodge the Lobos’ ninth-inning rally. UNM’s rally started off with a leadoff double from sophomore first baseman Jack Zoellner. UNM would eventually load the bases with nobody out.

After striking for two runs in the ninth, senior pinch hitter Ryan Padilla failed to put the ball in play with the tying run in scoring position and one out. Carl Stajduhar couldn’t play hero with two down, as the freshman utility infielder grounded into a fielder’s choice to end the game.

New Mexico (16-13, 8-7 Mountain West) fell to four games behind the conference-leading Aztecs. SDSU moved to 24-8 and 12-3 in conference play.

Sand Volleyball

The Lobos dropped both matches against No. 12 Arizona on Saturday and Sunday.

The Lobos (1-8) have now faced six opponents ranked in the top-25. Four of UNM’s last five opponents have been nationally ranked.

Although sophomore Lise Rugland and senior Ashley Newman took a match on Sunday afternoon, the Lobos couldn’t claim a win elsewhere for the entire weekend. UNM’s 4-1 loss Sunday afternoon marked their seventh consecutive loss in the sand.

Rugland and Newman’s victory ended three consecutive matches without a single victory. ASU, Arizona, and Grand Canyon University each garnered 5-0 sweeps over UNM’s sand team.

The Wildcats’ two wins on the weekend propelled Arizona to a 10-1 record on the season. Arizona’s only loss came against Nebraska in the Wildcat spring challenge on March 18.

Men’s Golf

New Mexico’s golf team, led by four sub-par scores, finished off the 3M Augusta Invitational in first place.

The Lobos, currently ranked 25th in the country, finished three shots better than second-place finisher No. 2 Illinois. The Lobos also took down the No. 3 team in the nation, as Texas came in fourth in the tournament, shooting combined scores of -20.

UNM was led by senior Sam Saunders, who finished tied for fourth place on the day, shooting 10-under. His combined round scores of 66-70-70 were the best on the team.

Fellow senior Gavin Green also finished in the top-10 individual scores after his cumulative 7-under score. Green scored 69-71-69 over the three days at the Augusta Invitational.

Georgia’s Lee McCoy won the individual title with a -16.
