Sports briefs for June 22, 2015

Men’s basketball

The Lobos received a commitment from Nikola Scekic for the 2015 recruiting class last week.

Scekic, who is originally from Serbia, is a 7-foot, 245-pound center and will join UNM after playing at MMG Academy in Florida. Scekic chose to play at UNM over returning to Serbia and playing professionally.

“We are really excited to add Nikola to our roster,” head coach Craig Neal said in a release. “It’s very hard to get a player of his caliber this late in the year. He had some professional offers to play in Europe, but decided to become a Lobo instead ... Nikola can also step out and shoot the ball with good range while being a great passer for a big man.”

Jordan Hunter, Dane Kuiper and Anthony Mathis are UNM’s other recruits in the 2015 class.

Track & Field

UNM’s Peter Callahan was named Mountain West Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Co-Student-Athlete of the Year, the conference announced Wednesday.

Callahan earned All-American honors at the NCAA Championships this past month. He placed fourth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3 minutes, 55.22 seconds.

It was Callahan’s second straight year earning All-American status.

Callahan is the third UNM athlete to ever earn top-four finishes in consecutive NCAA Championship appearances. He’s also the ninth UNM athlete to earn All-American honors for two straight years in the same event.
