UNM Students Attend Domenici Public Policy Conference

Nine UNM students were given the chance to question top U.S public policy leaders last week at the Domenici Public Policy Conference hosted by New Mexico State University held at the Las Cruces Convention Center, according to a UNM release.

Nineteen students from NMSU, UNM, Eastern New Mexico University, New Mexico Tech and Western New Mexico University collaborated over the summer to develop questions to ask each speaker at the conference.

For this year's event, the speakers included “former North Carolina Governor Jim Hunt, former U.S secretary of Transportation Mary Peters, a former U.S ambassador to Syria, and New Mexico's current governor Susana Martinez,” according to the release.

These student-attendees were nominated by faculty or administration from their schools, and selected by the Domenici Institute's advisory council.

"This conference is a way for me to hone in more specifically on policy that is regarding infrastructure, economic development and education as a whole," Jenna Hagengruber, president of the Associated Students of UNM, said in the release.

NMSU President Garrey Carruthers, who is also the directory of the Domenici Institute, said that Hagengruber and the other students took advantage of a unique opportunity by attending the event.

"These students get an opportunity to ask questions of some of the top policymakers and analysts of our time, and along the way they discover a lot about themselves and the world,” he said.
