Conference appoints 60 Lobos to All-Academic squad

Less than two weeks after New Mexico announced its highest GPA among student-athletes in program history, the Mountain West appointed 60 individuals to the All-Academic honorees.

It was the third most in conference, but the highest in New Mexico student-athlete history. It was also the first time UNM has had back-to-back years of sending 60 or more student-athletes to the All-Academic team after sending 61, the highest in program history, a year ago.

New Mexico’s contribution of individuals helped set to a conference record of 571 MW student-athletes honored, according to a release.

According to the Mountain West's website, student-athetes are eligible for All-Academic honors by maintaining a 3.0 GPA. They also must be either starters or otherwise "significant contributors" to their respective teams.

Each sport broke down their All-Academic honorees as such:

Football: 19

Women’s Soccer: 18

Women’s cross country: 9

Men’s cross country 7

Women’s Volleyball: 7

Football’s 19 individuals were the second-most in school history behind last year’s record of 20. Head coach Bob Davie has now accumulated 69 All-Academic student-athletes during his four-year tenure at New Mexico. The previous record was set between 2007-2010 seasons when UNM sent 53 athletes to the All-Academic team.

Heather Dyche’s first year at the helm of the women’s soccer team set an academic record with the 18 awarded. The previous record was 17 set in 2012 and 2013.
