Open house for prospective business and accounting graduate students

An open house will be held tomorrow from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Jackson Student Center (west of the Anderson School of Management on the UNM Campus) for those who are pursuing or are interested in pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Accounting or Master of Science in Information Systems and Assurance degree.

Anderson School of Management Student Recruitment Specialist Lisa Beauchene coordinated the open house and described it as a business casual networking event.

Beauchene said that, during the event, guests will hear “elevator pitches” about the Anderson School of Management’s various departments. During that time, 13 professors from each of the degrees and concentrations in the MBA will answer students’ questions and promote their programs.

A representative from the Graduate Resource Center will also discuss funding, both outside and through in-house funding provided by the Anderson School of Management to graduate students. The admissions coordinator and Graduate Advisor will also speak with students about the admissions process.

Beauchene said she encourages all attendees to come prepared with questions and that those interested in the Master of Science in Information Systems and Assurance program to bring their resumes. Everyone will also receive a folder to collect information from various tables they visit.

Jacob Collins, a freshman business major, said he is going to the open house and is hoping to possibly find an internship opportunity or make connections with future employers.

“I think the event will impact UNM in a positive way, giving the students an opportunity to explore what possibilities lie outside their current academia,” Collins said.

Beauchene said the event provides students with the rare opportunity to participate in one-on-one interactions with professors.

"With each program director providing a short speech about the benefits of their individual degrees, students may learn about a program that better fits their career goals," she said. "We’re also giving away ten application fee waivers to the first ten RSVPs, who receive it if they are present at the event.”

Anderson School’s part-time MBA program is ranked in the top 100 among schools nationwide, she said.

"We are also AACSB [Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business] accredited, which is an international accreditation and is in the likes of the top 20 percent of business schools in the world. Of those accredited schools, we are one of the 24 percent of schools accredited in both business and accounting," she said. "Our new Master of Science in Information Systems and Assurance [program] is truly unique, and it currently has 100 percent job placement, since it first started in Fall 2014."

Beauchene said, currently, the Master of Accounting Tax track is the only one of its kind in the state and UNM's Master of Accountancy program also provides a Professional track for students interested in accounting that don’t have an accounting undergraduate degree.

"We are also a very affordable option in comparison to other management schools," she said.

Collins is hoping to one day use his degree to work with a government organization, he said. “Anderson has done a lot for me, in terms of focusing on the fundamentals of business and helping me understand what practical knowledge I will need to know for my future.”

Beauchene said anyone from engineers to artists to psychologists can benefit from earning a business degree and 86 percent of students that come from Anderson School of Management with an MBA are placed into a job.

"The average salary of our MBA graduates in comparison to UNM’s average salary of baccalaureate graduates is over 21 thousand dollars more per year," she said. "We have our own Career Services Center that just recently hosted an Internship Fair that includedmore than 100 students looking for jobs with over 26 employers. Over 40 internships were offered at this fair. More than 200 employers are actively recruiting our students. Anderson School is known for putting students in front of opportunities.”
