Banned man may have returned to campus

A 24-year-old man that UNM has banned for coming to campus with a gun and a car with a trunk full of ammo a few weeks ago may have returned, according to one student on social media.

The student posted on her Facebook account on Nov. 21 that a man who said his name was Dan – the man who was banned is named “Daniel” – entered her classroom “with no backpack or writing/school supplies.”

According to the student’s post, no one in the classroom recognized the man, and he started to engage in activities that, according to the student, the teacher of the class considers a “MASSIVE no-no.”

The student said she left the class and noticed another man dressed “in all black” who “immediately turned around and stood/hid behind the corner” when the student noticed him. At that point, the man who entered the classroom said he was “wanting to sit in on our class because he was ‘waiting for a buddy to give him a ride.’”

They re-entered the class at a later time, at which point the student pointed them out to her teacher.

“Something wasn’t right,” the student’s post reads. “Nothing happened, but they both didn’t receive papers at the end of class and they both asked the TA for the sign-in sheet.”

It was after the incident that the student said she saw the email dispersed to all UNM students and staff warning of a man who had been banned. She wrote in her post that the man who came to her class had shorter hair (than in the picture UNM provided in the email) “but the same face.”

The student ended her post by saying that while she wasn’t totally certain the man was the same as indicated in the email, she urges her peers to “take the necessary precautions to ensure your safety and the safety of your peers and professors.”

The student also circulated her Facebook post on Twitter. The University has since responded with a tweet of its own, thanking the student for sharing her experience and stating that UNM “will be looking into” the incident “to ensure a safe campus for you and the rest of the University.”

The man who is banned from campus came to UNM the week before and was confronted by UNMPD officers in the SUB. He had a holstered gun on his hip, and after being apprehended by officers, said he wanted to determine the response time of law enforcement, according to a UNMPD report.

The man is described as being 5 feet 10 inches tall, 155 pounds and having dark brown hair and brown eyes.

Students are advised to not approach Arushanov and immediately contact UNMPD if they see him on campus. UNMPD can be reached at 277-2241.
