Battery on health care personnel at UNMH
On the morning of Nov. 24, a UNMPD officer was sent to UNMH in reference to a patient-on-nurse incident, according to a police report.
Upon arrival, the officer spoke with the nurse who said she noticed a patient who was supposed to be restrained to his hospital bed had left his room. According to the report, the nurse said when she approached the patient in an attempt to have him return to his room, he became angry, pushed her against a wall and punched her several times on the left side of her face.
With the help of other staff, she was able to restrain the patient — he punched her another time during this process, she stated in the report.
The police officer noticed the nurse’s face was slightly swollen. The patient was medicated after the incident, and due to the patient’s mental state, the officer was unable to speak with him.
The police report will be sent to the District Attorney’s Office for review and potential prosecution.
Indecent exposure in front of Tamarind Institute
In the early morning hours of Nov. 26, while on patrol in the area of Central Avenue and Stanford Drive SE, an officer noticed three males standing around a traffic light pole in front of the Tamarind Institute, according to a police report.
When the officer pulled closer, the subjects seemed to be urinating on the pole. When the officer used his spotlight to light up the area, two of the men stopped urinating and adjusted their pants.
However, the third individual continued to urinate, even when the officer engaged the emergency equipment, hoping to clear traffic. It was not until the officer used his air horn and yelled at the subject to stop his actions that the male stopped urinating.
The officer was able to cross the intersection, as traffic had cleared. The three males said they needed to urinate, as they had been out drinking and were walking back to campus, according to the report.
The male who stopped urinating last said he should have stopped immediately, but stated “it’s hard to stop when you start.” He was issued a citation.

Violent individual at UNMH
On the evening of Nov. 28, a UNM police officer was dispatched to UNM Hospital in reference to a violent individual who was detained by hospital security, according to a UNMPD report.
The officer observed three hospital security officers handcuffing a male on the sidewalk on Lomas Boulevard, just south of UNMH. The UNMPD officer noticed the subject was bleeding from his face and hands and told the security officers he would need medical treatment before being taken into custody.
Hospital security took the subject into the hospital, and the UNMPD officer was informed that the subject had a small cut on both hands, needed stitches on his lip and a broken right arm.
The UNMPD officer was unsure whether the injuries occurred when the subject made contact with security or if the injuries occurred at another time. According to the report, the security officers who detained the subject said he was taken to the hospital after engaging in a fight near the intersection of Lomas Boulevard and Louisiana Boulevard with medical complaints about his lip and arm.
According to the report, the subject arrived at the hospital initially, he threw a bag of clothing at the individual, striking the officer in the face. Later, the subject was taken to the Metropolitan Detention Center.
