Column: Welcome to Daily Lobo Music

2016 was very much, in almost every way, a calendar year. Things happened. People reacted. Sometimes things didn’t happen. That was OK too.

Personally, my favorite part was the music.

In this cold post-Bowie world we live in, it’s becoming more worthwhile to take a step back, lay down in the cool metaphorical lawn of time, and thoroughly listen to some jams that have the potential to really animate the senses. Finding a righteous album can make one’s week, nay, one’s year — dare I suggest a lifetime? Considering that songs we found as children still find ways into our Spotify playlists, that is.

You don’t need us at the Daily Lobo to tell you that music is getting strange in all directions. These days all you need is a microphone and, literally, anything else to forge an interesting sonic landscape. Just like how a stressed and over-stimulated Mr. Meeseeks exclaims when it is unable to die: “Things are getting weird, Jerry.”

With the launch of the Daily Lobo’s new music blog, we have been given a particularly beautiful opportunity to catalog all this weirdness and report it directly to, of course, you; the reader-audience-person, you dastardly intricate conglomeration of water and electricity.

It feels right to start the blog off with a massive “Best of 2016” series — albums that either stand out in their respective genre or just, in general, evoke absurd amounts of groove.

Like, so much groove. To the point that we said, “Let’s start a blog about music and tell people about this.”

Groovy stuff. But there’s a lot more we have planned this semester: gear analysis, concert features, artist spotlights, critique pieces and Q&A’s with touring musicians — we’re taking advantage of this soapbox and preaching for as long as we possibly can.

Music is awesome and no one really talks about it. So, if you’d like to come help talk about it with us, email dailylobo@gmail.com or shoot a tweet over to @AudrinTheOdd. We’re looking for some more writers to help us get this music ball rolling down this music hill with some music gravity.

And of course, check out the blog on the “Music” section of the Daily Lobo website. Our “Best of 2016” series is the main feature for right now, with five great albums of four different genres being uploaded throughout the beginning of the semester.

Peace and love,

Audrin Baghaie
