Letter: Regardless of political differences, students should support each other

Editor,

It’s been a long year of transition and change for many groups of people, specifically students. It seems hard to believe that political differences can cause so much hate and violence against one another.

As I read this article (“Column: The importance of kindness in times of political tension”) I thought to myself, ‘What do the red gloves mean to me?’

If you are born and raised in Albuquerque, your chances of becoming a Lobo are high. I have had the privilege of graduating from the University of New Mexico with my Bachelor’s in Psychology and am now pursuing a degree in social work at New Mexico State University. As I reflect on the red glove I am reminded of the pride I took wearing red as a UNM student. For me red represents the privilege of being able to obtain a degree when all odds were against me.

Today I realize that for some that same pride is being stripped away from them. Some of our very own students are fearful of whether to not they will be able to complete their degree because of political shifts and changes.

I’m not here to discuss politics, but to say the very least we as students, regardless of the color we wear to represent our schools, we must work to spread kindness and support like offering red gloves to others on a cold windy day.
