University suspends its personal mail policy
UNM Mailing Systems has suspended the policy that prevented Ph.D. candidate Nina Lanza from getting her tango shoes delivered at work.
Debra Fondino, associate director of University Services, said the entire Mailing Systems policy manual — including Section 6340, which prohibits personal mail from being delivered through the University — is under revision and has been for the past six months.
She said the policy was written in 1991 and is outdated.
“We’ve submitted, as one of our goals this year, to revamp (the policies) and bring them to current day,” she said. “There was definite need. This (controversy) just prompted us to try and get it done more quickly.”
Fondino said the whole policy manual will be revised as soon as possible.
“We have agreed that we’d try to get it done within the next 30 to 60 days,” she said. “And until we can get everyone’s input and get this finalized, we are going to be going ahead and accepting incidental personal mail.”
Lanza said she was surprised by Mailing Systems’ quick response to her concerns. The Daily Lobo published an article on the issue Wednesday.
“I’m very pleased that the Mailing Systems responded so swiftly to my issue,” she said. “I’m looking forward to seeing the new mailing policy when it is available.”
Fondino said Section 6340 is being suspended for 30 to 60 days pending the completion of the new Mailing Systems policy, but Carol Stephens, director of the UNM Policy Office, said the process might take longer than that.
“That process, because it’s a pretty thorough review process, probably would take about three months from beginning to end,” she said.
Stephens said the new Mailing Systems policy will be reviewed by organizations campuswide, like the Graduate and Professional Student Association, Associated Students of UNM and the executive cabinet, before it reaches the president’s desk for approval.
Fondino said she doesn’t know why Section 6340 was originally put in place, but she said there is still a need for some restriction on personal mail.
“We have to discuss the fact that there could be items coming to the University that the University would not consider appropriate,” she said. “We have to make sure that we cover it in ways that will cover and protect everyone.”

Left unreported by the Daily Lobo or University Services is the way Nina Lanza verbally abused the staff at MS. It is sad to see such reprehensible behavior rewarded by the University.

The University and all employees will provide a humane workplace that is safe, healthy, respectful, and supportive of a diverse workforce.

It blows to continuously hear about Policy Changes at UNM Mailing Services on the front page of the Daily Lobo, then hearing about it from Management or Supervisors.
The Postal Services Department is to be used for official University purposes only.

I would like to applaud Ms. Lanza and University Services for their efforts to bring about much needed changes in Mailing Systems policy.
Policies instated by the university exist for the benefit of the university community. Policies that are outdated or no longer serve the community in an effective manner should be reevaluated; Ms. Lanza has done the university a service by calling attention to an arbitrary and antiquated mail censorship system.

It is refreshing to see these issues dealt with in a constructive manner by Ms. Lanza, University Services, and the UNM Policy Office.

Also left unreported by the Daily Lobo was that Ms. Lanza is an Earth and Planetary Science grad student who had her UNM-related dancing shoes sent to that address as opposed to her club’s address. Dancing shoes to E&PS-it’s not censorship, I would have sent them back too.
I agree with Porfrey that it’s sad that UNM continually rewards self-centered whiners, at the real $ expense of students and tax payers.

As for Justin, another E&PS grad student, how does UNM Mailing Systems becoming inundated with personal mail and packages benefit the university?
But even with all my complaining, I am glad there are now no restrictions (at least for the next few months) on personal mail. I can’t wait to have all my Christmas gift crap like games, DVDs, books, music and maybe even some shoes shipped to campus so I don’t have to go pick them up or worry about having them stolen before I get home at night! Thanks Daily Lobo and Mailing Systems!

unm staff, I don’t see what your issue is. The shoes were for a university-sponsored club and therefore seem to be to be legitimate university mail. And she’s an E&PS student, so of course she’s going to have them sent to her own mailbox. The Mailing Systems policy doesn’t say that the mail delivered to your campus mailbox has to be ONLY for the department you are in, just that it can’t be personal mail.

I too would like to applaud Ms. Lanza for her efforts to bring about much needed changes in Mailing Systems policy.
It’s about time someone exposed this asinine policy and Mailing Systems for what they really are… a bunch of censoring piratesque fascists!

In honor of this great accomplishment, I suggest we bronze Ms. Lanza’s tango shoes and create a plaque for display in the UNM Policy Office. The plaque can say something like “These dancing shoes weren’t made for dancing – they were made for FREEDOM!” And we must include a picture of Ms. Lanza on the plaque; one of those chin-on-fist poses like the high school seniors have. I can’t think of a better way to honor a true anti-censorship, pro-dance champion than that!
I hope to soon have the opportunity to see Ms. Lanza cut a rug in her Danskin Tango-Freedoms! I’m sure it will be a Tango dance as never before seen! I bet she makes “Baby” from Dirty Dancing look like a donkey on roller skates!
I say, “Bravo Ms. Lanza! BRAV-O!”
Signed,

I agree The Postal Services Department should be used for official University purposes only, instead of personal use.
