Burbank comes off as arrogant by bashing Techno Guy's music

Editor,

I am responding to this entire debacle surrounding “Techno Guy” and “Disgruntled Professor.” The reason I have jumped into this debate a bit late is because I could see both sides of view and sympathized with both, until now. On one side, you have Techno Guy, who wants nothing more than to spread what he deems to be the best form of music as a musician and avid listener, I too have had the urge to bring around a big boom box blaring the likes of Modest Mouse or The Shins, but either way I don’t have the bravery to be that guy and feel my effort would be wasted.

I also sympathize with James Burbank, as yes, I too, have had to suffer the misfortune of being late to a class and walking by Techno Guy’s not-so-enjoyable music. Could I have taken a different path? Yes. Could I have asked him to turn it down? Yes. Do I feel entitled to a quiet university? Maybe. But in my four years on campus, I have heard a plethora of things which could be construed as disruptions to the classroom environment: various bands playing in front of the SUB, open mic abortion debates in Smith Plaza and (until the past year or so) the guy who liked to sing in front of the SUB.

Now, in response to Wednesday’s article regarding the new restraints on the volume at which Techno Man can play his music: Mr. Burbank seems very arrogant and immature in complaining people are being rude to him. Additionally, people telling him to “shut up,” and advocating “free speech,” are his reasons for speaking out more about the situation. If you want to be more immature and arrogant than the students who are against your stance, fine, but it makes your point of view look worse.
You have stifled free speech by setting a precedent for future UNM engagements regarding the level at which free speech can be expressed.

Wow! Well Said my friend. I have never heard of “Modest Mouse or The Shins” sounds good, bring it by some time, we can play it out…at the level given by the SUB of course, Im open to listen to something diffrent and/or play it. Jordon DiMaggio, thank you for having a fair and balanced view on this.

Joshua your perseverance through this entire stupid spectacle is downright inspirational, before you were just the guy who played music outside the SUB but now you really are a symbol.
You are one of the nicest people I have ever had the pleasure to meet on this campus, you always have compliments for everyone and are willing to speak and listen fully to whomever is around. Burbank could learn a lesson about human righteousness and kindness from you.

wow this guy who blasts bad music from a boom box is getting lots of press. He’s even being called a “musician”.
It’s pretty simple: there are OSHA rules. Make him follow them. Make the sound level near him, and more importantly inside satellite be below OSHA levels. Then let the goof play bad dancebar music on his crappy boom box.

My particular taste is grindcore. I have a boom box. It hadn’t occurred to me to bring it here & play it at full blast next to my fellow artist. It’s always good to give people a choice.

“ilikemusic” My grammar in this article was edited, and in doing so someone changed the line “On one side, you have Techno Guy, who wants nothing more than to spread what he deems to be the best form of music; as a musician and avid listener,” They left out a key ‘;’ which does change how the sentence should flow.

Joshua, I’d be glad to, but now that you have to keep your music to a minimum volume, it would be very hard to find you. ;)

Looks like Mr. Burbank needs to take a music appreciation class! To call the music of Josh Arellano “noise pollution” reflects not only ignorance but a lack of knowledge about what music is. There are so many different genres of music in this world of ours, that we have to be a little bit more tolerant of each other’s musical tastes…I for one enjoyed listening to Josh’s music.

Furthermore, cacophony is defined as any sound that does not have a specific rhythm or melody…THIS is noise pollution, not Josh’s music. Music can be either dissonant or consonant, depending on the key signature and the mood of the music.

I once heard a guy in front of the SUB singing so off-key and so out of rhythm, that I wanted to cut my ears off…he would have gotten 3 X’s on America’s Got Talent. Now THAT is noise pollution, a.k.a cacophony.

Jordan:

Techno Guy is a “musician?” Really, what instrument does he play? Can he sing in tune? I have never seen him playing a musical instrument.

Playing a boom box does not make you a “musician.” That’s an insult to those of us who can actually play music. You could train a chimp to turn on a boom box.

He’s an avid listener? BFD, so am I. I have my radio with headphones on right now, here in my office, listening to Afternoon Free-form on KUNM. See kids, when you have an actual job, you have to be considerate and respectful of others and not impose your tastes on someone else.

summer: I agree that it has been a “stupid spectacle” – on the part of Arellano, that is. “Inspirational” … “a symbol?” Of “human righteousness and kindness?” Please. Reading his comments, he’s comes off as a rather immature and inconsiderate individual if you ask me.

I dub this era the Age of Hyperbole.

After the compromise was reached and he was allowed to resume his boom (with plenty of volume to be heard, I was at the SUB yesterday) he still whined about it here on dailylobo.com.

You are praising him as some hero, yet I see him as a spoiled, arrogant, and rude. He is not willing to “listen” to anyone who does not have his selfish point of view.

Saez: The “guy in front of the SUB singing so off-key … out of rhythm” was called “Lobo Lewie” I think, as he always wore a Lobos cap. Hey, I agree with you – he is also a pest. Those of you saying “why pick on poor little Josh? what about the loud preacher, etc…” I agree! Anyone making that much noise, *especially if they are not a UNM student or employee should be asked to leave the campus if they have no official business here. This is not a public park.

Lawrence, please read my earlier comment and don’t come to conclusions so quickly. I’m employed, an avid musician(over 15 years playing 3 instruments), and still love to try to curb others to my tastes, as most people, including yourself(unknowingly), enjoy doing. (i.e. Look at our everyday social interactions.)

Jordan?

Or is it really Joshua?

Are you one-in-the same? thus praising yourself?

“I’m employed, an avid musician(over 15 years playing 3 instruments)…”

Interesting … Lawrence

Hahaha, no not at all one in the same. No time to sit around with a boom box near the SUB (or I’d like to think so). Plus, I’m not too much of a techno/electronic music, aside from occasional Squarepusher or Apex Twin when the mood fits.

But Lawrence, you play piano right? You were in school of rock I believe… ? http://www.freewebs.com/kevinclark_schoolofrock/robert.gif

I will not run my life in the name of the status quo, I will shake the foundation that I am involved with, I will Win in this battle over the music being played at the proper Volume and that’s just the way its gonna be! PERIOD.

The reason I am definitely in support of Techno Guy is because you simply don’t hear that type of music anywhere else in Albuquerque. You don’t hear it on the radio or in restaurants, bars, shops, anywhere. Even the stuff they play at the clubs downtown is the annoying cheesy side of techno. I don’t understand what all the fuss is about. So you might hear semi-loud techno music for like 30 seconds as you’re walking to class…2 DAYS A WEEK! Josh, don’t worry. People like bitching about anything. Next week it will be somebody else and everyone will forget about this.
