If Techno Guy gets shut down, everyone else should be too
Editor,
When “Techno Guy” was banned from playing music on his boom box, I became a little sad. Every day, I would eat lunch outside on the northern end of the SUB to hear Techno Guy play his tunes. Since he was banned from doing so, the college atmosphere has been tainted by this professor who thinks he can speak on behalf of the whole student body by telling Techno Guy to turn it down. However, what really frustrated me are those who support this professor and go as far to insult and criticize Techno Guy and his music in a ridiculous manner.™So far I’ve been reading comments in the Daily Lobo complaining that Techno Guy’s music disturbs them, they do not like it and that it’s “unhealthy.” (Yes, some people actually wrote that.) Yet they have no problem with Mr. Gospel shouting verses from the Bible right next to Popejoy Hall or the other bands who play their lame excuse for music on the south side of the SUB. No one from the UNM faculty seems to mind displaying giant pictures of aborted babies or guys skateboarding in Smith Plaza. Why does Techno Guy get the boot? Why is he distracting?™To those who say that listening to Techno Guy’s tunes is noise pollution, and therefore unhealthy: Give me a break. You’re unreal. That music is nothing compared to cars, airplanes and people’s voices. Should we ban those as well? How about these designated smoking areas? Secondhand smoke is very unhealthy, yet the smokers do not give a crap about us and smoke anyway.™People who complain they can hear Techno Guy’s tunes from their classrooms are obviously exaggerating since I could barely hear the music from the west side of Smith Plaza. Those who whine that when they are trying to study where the music is being played disturbs them, here’s some advice: Move somewhere else. No one is tying you to a post and forcing you to listen. If you don’t like the music, then plug into your own iPod and shut up. There are many places you could be studying, reading or listening to your own music. You could do those tasks at the duck pond, the library, Dane Smith Hall, Smith Plaza and inside the SUB.™I don’t like reading my book where Mr. Gospel is. I don’t like studying in the SUB because everyone is talking too loud. I don’t want my appetite ruined because of graphic pictures of aborted babies. I do not like sitting in Smith Plaza where all the skateboarders rampage all over the place, but I don’t whine, like a dog, telling people to shut up or do something else. I go somewhere those distractions are not present, because everyone has a right to do something as long as they are not infringing on the rights of other people. What that professor and his supporters did was a fascist move. Until we ban Mr. Gospel, the annoying bands, skateboarders and displays of giant graphic photos, Techno Guy should be left alone.

Techno guy has disrupted my studying on multiple occasions. Sometimes, I am in a hurry, and I just want to get a burrito and coffee from Satellite, sit outside the sub(where it is quieter WHEN techno guy is not around) and read before class, or do homework. Its inconvenient to have to move to the library, or some where else to do homework just because I cannot concentrate when he is playing his music so loud. It has been a frustrating experience. Sometimes, I will write a paper near the sub, so I can use their free printing(which I hear is not going to be free soon).. and I don’t want to go to the library when I don’t have cash or coins to print.
Trust me, I love house music. I love to dance. But what is the big deal about turning his music down, or moving somewhere else(like the front end of the sub, perhaps?) I am so happy Burbank complained, I don’t think his complaint was such a big deal as people are making it. All techno guy had to do was turn down his music, which I am very happy about, now I can eat and study in peace.

All the people who complain about Techno Guy are typical whiner, out-of-state, out-of-place tourists! Please go back to where you come from and quit your complaining.
Let the Techno Guy rock on.

student in response,
You’re exactly the kind of person Abe is talking about. He’s talking about why people like you keep complaining about Techno Guy when all the other guys like gospel man and the skateboard people don’t get so much as a slap on the wrist. You think his music is too loud, than stay in the sub where you won’t hear him or listen to your own music. That professor made the mistake of speaking on behalf of the students when clearly the majority states the opposite. How come he dosen’t bother the other people with their bible and their skateboarding? And I know friends who had him for a class, he’s a plain & simple facsist.

This “Techno Guy”… He is the worst human being I have ever had the displeasure of coming across in my entire life. Techno Guy killed my father. And for that, I can never forgive him. He is a menace. A nuisance. A disgrace to all that is good and holy in this world. With every fiber in my body, I wish nothing but pain and suffering upon him and his “hot beats” until the end of time.

I feel that this is a violation of free speech. People playing their instruments around campus play louder than his music. I can only hear it when I’m skating by the SUB, and people conjugate in the area around Mr. Arnello and they listen to his music joyfully. If people want to be in a more secluded environment then they know very well that the SUB area is very noise polluted with people going to their next class and the such. People who play their instruments are doing so and asking for money in exchange (i.e. an open guitar case or a hat on the ground). Mr. Arnello stated in the Daily Lobo he just wants to expose people to new music. I feel as if the teacher who filed the initial complaint is kind of a sour person if he goes out of his way to tell someone to turn the volume down. I feel as if techno is not his type of music, nor are the bagpipes as he filed a complaint against another student for playing the instrument. However, our campus is a diverse environment with different cultures, tastes, and interests and what Mr. Arnello is doing is simply expanding upon our diverse environment.

Well Sam, at least you listen to the fact that I work. That really is none of your business, I could get down with Madam Butterfly @ work, but non the less, college campus = diverse population, freedom of speech, work = place of business, simple.

Well I just thought that you and your customers could stand to be exposed to a type of music you may be unfamiliar with. So sorry that your life is a closed book while all of ours are in desperate need of your intervention. If it’s the style of music that concerns you, I’m sure someone has some Muzak that they could crank up the volume for. In not inside, than in the public parking lot outside. I’m sure we can all be flexible.
These ideas aren’t causing you any concern, are they? As a free and open-minded person, you’re willing to endure what you subject others to, aren’t you?

Sam my concern is about a public forum that can be brought up on google search. Basicaly simple anomity. Get a hold of me on my website, unmtechnoguy.com then if really want to play music at my work, we will go from there, remember I am a Manager.

I don’t think your concern really is about a public forum. I’ve occasionally been on campus during the times you play, and you’ve turned a hundred foot circle of sound into your forum, repeatedly, the desires of all passersby be damned. More troubling, though, is the dismissive and even smarmy way you dismiss anyone who is tired of the sound assault. Free speech as a concept says nothing about decibels, for one. Your attitude that the entire community needs to be educated to appreciate your personal musical preferences is even worse. I like to think I recognize a genuine free speech defender, but in you I’ve only come to recognize narcissism. The world and the professor in question are not out to get you, and you and your supporters need to give both a much-needed rest.

I don’t think he plays techno, I think he is into house music. Which is like a techno / trance hybrid…
I say that if he need to stfu, so do the religious extremists on campus and no more band music by the SUB.

Hey Joshua,
I’ve read everything you’ve written in both articles here. Some things you said I have to respect. My comment about you in the other article was out of line. I still don’t like your music and think it’s too loud, but I realize I need to be more tolerant and considerate of others too. So, call it backpeddling or whatever you want, but I’ve pondered deeply and changed my mind on this issue. I think you should be left alone to carry on as always.

End ALL activities in the mall area period or let the Techno Guy rock. It must be one or the other.
Thanks to Professor Whiner and supporters for coming to New Mexico, you have demonstrated how tourists typically behave once here. Please feel free to move back where you came from.

Adam. I don’t think the techno guy is smart enough to realize what a troll post is. He probably thought they were serious posts and felt the need to get defensive about them like he has about everything else. I wouldn’t say that Josh Arellano is the sharpest tool in the shed, so to speak. He can’t type, he spells everything wrong, and makes typos everywhere. But that’s just kind of nit picking, and everyone makes those errors. But what really bugs me is that his supporters make stronger arguments to let him keep playing his music than he does.

Well Sir, when you have supports that realize what you are trying to do, It’s unnecessary. When it comes to grammar, I never claimed to be an English Major. Is my grammar and or spelling bad, yeah, does that take away from my character, no. Going biblical for a moment “let ye who has no sin cast the first stone!” that quote sums it up. Bottom line, I will not run my life in the name of the status quo, I will shake the foundation that I am involved with, I will Win in this battle over the music being played at the proper Volume and that’s just the way its gonna be! PERIOD.
I am UNM Techno Guy and I approve this message!

Damn. Looks like you got me there. I can’t argue with that. Well whenever you meet with the higher-ups about your music, be sure to tell them what you just told me. Surely they’ll give in and let you play your music, because that’s how it’s gonna be. Period.
