Lambert has no excuse for globally criticized 'rough play'
Editor,
The Belfast Telegraph in Northern Ireland wrote that Elizabeth Lambert’s dirty play was some of the “worst sportsmanship seen on a pitch.” It didn’t differentiate between men’s or women’s play. I’m sure a gritty town like Belfast has seen its share of cheap shots. That the Belfast Telegraph was appalled makes Lambert’s excuse that “rough play” is a part of the sport pretty lame. Rough play, yes; trying to cause your opponent’s neck to snap, no way.

Easy to lose sight of how the other woman had just hit her in the solar plexus and had her by the shorts. It was a rough play in a rough game but not as bad as people are making when they just look at the conclusion and hair pull. These young women play their hearts out, and when it gets out of line (as it did in this case) it is up to the officials to make the call, and the coach to bring it up after the game. But then again our own football coach has his own standard doesn’t he? Interesting that they are calling this worst sportsmanship in a place (UK) where soccer fans tear the place down whether they win or lose, perhaps they should apply the same std to themselves.

Her so-called apology wasn’t even an apology, it was just a thinly veiled rationalization and justification. She “regrets” her actions, of course, because she got caught, and was sorry that she “retaliated” which is another form of blaming the crime on the victim. There’s a big difference between the nudge she received and the neck-breaking yank that she delivered, among al the other childishly over-the-top actions. Why hasn’t the district attorney filed assault charges yet. And what about the coach; can she really not know what’s going on and what kind of dirty play Lambert is capable of? The coach needs suspension; Lambert needs lifetime suspension; and assault charges need to be investigated.

Well said, Tony.
I totally agree with you – it was not even an apology. After her expression of ‘regret’ she added “it was not inficative of my character.” As if your character is something you turn on and off.
But actions speak louder than words, of course: according to yesterday’s ABQ Journal, she is going to try to get reinstated to the team. No concept of punishment or consequences in that spoiled-brat head of hers.

What I want to know is where was the referee while all this
was going on? He/she needs to do a much better job of controlling the game and Lambert deserved a red card on at
least three different occasions. Lambert is an embarrassment for the University of New Mexico because she reflects against the coach, team and university. Love her aggressive play, but
she needs to control that within the rules which are set up
so people do not get hurt playing the game. Taking cheap shots and other goon tactics can’t be tolerated. Although the hair
pulldown was ridiculous, I thought the cheap shots going
for the leg and not the ball should have gotten her an
immediate red card. You can really mess up someone with that
kind of dirty play.
From observing those clips I get the feeling this isn’t the
first time she has played dirty, either. I bet other teams would tell you she has done similar tactics in their game as well.
