Woman praises Albuquerque public transportation system

Last updated: 01/11/10 2:20am

Dear Editor,

Exactly one month ago, I made a choice to ride the city bus to work at UNM main campus. Here are a few things I have learned:

—I saved $80 because I usually spend $20 per week on gas.
—The walk to the bus stop each morning isn’t so bad, and it gets my endorphins charged up for a “kick-start” to my day.

—Albuquerque drivers seriously need a refresher course in pedestrian safety. Please watch out for us at intersections!

—Drivers on the UNM campus also need to pay attention to pedestrians in the crosswalks. You are supposed to stop for us — at least slow down! And UNM needs to repaint the crosswalks.

—Riding the bus has added only 10 minutes to my morning commute. I used to leave my house at 7:15 in order to find parking and now I leave at 7:05 for my 10-minute walk to the bus stop.

—Going home is so much more relaxing. I do not miss the anxiety and frustration of sitting in traffic. By the way, the bus only adds 20 minutes to the end of my day and the walk home from the bus stop helps me wind down into “home” mode.

—There are many UNM and UNMH employees, faculty and staff who ride the bus.
—I love watching people. There is such a diversity of them and interesting conversations.

—My health and my appreciation for the environment have much improved. I am 53 years old. If I can do it, anyone can!

Thanks! I think alot of people would quickly appreciate many of the advantages of the car-less commute if they give it a chance!

seems to me that her compliment was more of public transportation generally, conceptually and not of this system specifically; which is good because this system is arranged by and for people who’s primary motivation for valuing public transportation, practically identical to hers, is not any consideration for the environment with which they will have to cope or for the well-being of others, but is rather valued for the money saving qualities it can share. I am a pedestrian, there are a number of occasions upon which this grand system does surely keep me from expending a great deal of energy, save me from the spending a similarly preposterous amount of money on taxi fair, but the frequency with which and hours during which it operates speak of both and/or either decades past or of a city not moving very far or quickly into much like progress. Though, I suppose, it does inspire me to seek greater things, to relocate as soon as possible….
