“I would probably not. I don’t read it. It is my second language, not my first. I think most people here are learning English now. I don’t see how it would be beneficial to the campus.”
Max Trujillo

“I think that Daily Lobo articles in Spanish would be really beneficial to the University, because there are a lot of students here who speak Spanish and have grown up in a bilingual environment. It will help people who speak primarily Spanish relate to the University. I would definitely read it myself. “
Meghan Allen

“Being that I am not bilingual, I wouldn’t read it. But I would like for there to be that option for people who are bilingual. This University is about including people, not excluding people. If people are more comfortable reading in Spanish then they should be able to. We are bordering a nation that is mostly Spanish. “
Paloma Dallago

“Yes, I know a little Spanish, so it would help me learn it better. It would give people a sense of culture. There are a lot of people who speak Spanish, so it would help people remember to keep reading and writing in Spanish.”

Yes we want it in Spanish, along with all your money, personal rights, identities, social security numbers, first born children, health care, food stamps, and welfare checks. Please just get all that ready for us.

There is no official language of the US.
The official languages of New Mexico are Spanish and English.

Enrollment at UNM in Spanish classes is the highest in the US. Spanish is the heritage language of a lot of our students. It would be nice to see that reflected in the Lobo with occasional articles in Spanish.

Let’s just extend the Mexico-US border to include the Eastern , Northern & Western state lines of New Mexico ! Not only would I like to see Daily Lobo articles in Spanish but, I would also like the opportunity to manufacture & distribute currently illegal drugs to the rest of the United States!
I would like to kick out of New Mexico all of the US Government influence and control to include the Los Alamos & Sandia Labs, all of the US Air Force Bases and in particular I would like to see the Mexican flag returned to it’s rightful position high atop the UNM campus !!! in correlation with the schools mascot which is a LOBO …that’s mexican, huhhh ….I mean Spanish for wolf just in case you didn’t know or you haven’t been paying attention!
and lastly before you call me a racist please know that I “walk the talk” as all of my children are bi-racial & bi cultural as I thoroughly appreciate, admire, and love my lovely little latina (mostly mexican, but some apache & german jew) non-spanish speaking AT ALL!!! life partner!!!
VIVA MEXICO! VIVA! NOT NEW! & NOT MEXICO !!! at least not yet! I’ve got my white “gringo fingers” crossed though!

Speaking English is pure common sense, speaking Spanish can be either a choice, as in I want to be bilingual, or it can be because you are new to the country and haven’t figured it out yet, or it can be sheer obstinance. The reason speaking English is important is because it is the international standard mode of language of the world (some say chinese is the no.1 language being spoken in the world but it is not the STANDARD).
There are no disadvantages to learning English, or any other language for that matter. Sure! people should still support their native language but learning English is a priority. Perhaps forgetting or discarding your own language is bad but not expanding your horizon of communication and learning English is just stupid.

English is like any language and the only difference is that the majority of the world knows English and not other Spanish.
In today’s time, being a bilingual or multilingual is an asset in both casual communication with other people and as well as work related form. English breaks the language barrier easily so it helps both the receiver and sender to understand the message.
Knowing a major language helps a person to find more opportunities. Why do you think Filipinos are being hired more easily than other races? Employers want employees that can really understand what they are saying and not have a hard time doing charades and wasting their time more. They want employees adapting to them and not them adapting the employee’s language.
Therefore, reading the Lobo in Spanish is not seen as an advantage.

The facts that are occurring to you, that thing in the back of your mind, that elephant in the living room, is that while their is nothing particularly negative about the Spanish language or Hispanic culture. The American, English caucasian culture that has boiled up from predominantly White European settlers is superior. Why cling to an idea or concept that has demonstrated itself to be less successful? All you have to do is monitor the activities in Mexico and understand what is going on there and why people are continually trying to get to the USA. It’s a no brainer, and don’t let anyone tell you it’s not.

Let’s remember the updated and more accurate definition of racist:
RACIST: 1. Slang: Extremely Disparaging and Offensive term for a white person. 2: a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities, if promoted by white people. 3: a belief that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race, if promoted by white people.

Lets remember that looking at the facts are of primary importance, not feelings, not resentments, not victimhood and certainly not a lack of personal accountability.

@Normal Student: You’re absolutely correct that knowing a major language helps a person find more opportunities. That’s exactly why it’s good to learn Spanish.

I agree that living in the U.S. and speaking English is key to to one’s economic standing. I was in, of all places Estonia, at hotel bar where I over heard a bunch of business people discussing some meeting that they had earlier. It turns out that the people were from Canada, Britain, Germany, Estonia and Finland. The language they were speaking “English.” Later as one of the Finnish men stood next to me to order another drink, I commented on how good his English was. He told me that most international business in Europe is conducted in English because English is the language of business.
To me this said two things:

1. Speaking English is a real assest
2. American’s are worthless when it comes to speaking two or more languages.
I can’t think of one reason why anyone on either side of this argument could disagree that being bi-lingual is a bad thing. To people south of the border, learn English and better your chances here. To those of us north of the border learn Spanish because we live so close to Mexico we should be able to communicate in both languages…..it is also good business.

@ Summerspeaker- Spanish is not a major language, a standard lauguage, nor an international language, however I agree with you that it’s a good language to speak.

@ Summerspeaker, let me clarify my comment about Spanish being a good language to speak. It’s a good language as long as it is not the only languge one can speak. If it’s the only language one speaks, then one is at a disadvantage.

Spanish is all those things, Normal Student. It’s typically ranked close to English in overall importance and influence.

Before Daily Lobo includes in its format columns in Spanish(or any other language). you have to be worried about the quality of your columns, articles and journalist.
Daily Lobo needs to get more involve into the UNM life and UNM community problems, and look for students issues. Do not copy/paste other newspapers articles or tabloid news to fill out your pages.

Katie has a good point, everyone probably will be speaking Spanish in New Mexico some day. In fact maybe New Mexico can eventually be incorporated into Mexico and fall further and further down the slippery slope. That seems to be what a lot of the UNM students think they want, and although it’s sheer madness, naivete’ and stupidity, perhaps that’s what New Mexico deserves. Then like a skilled surgeon that removes a gangrenous lifeless limb, the USA can cut off New Mexico from the whole. Then and probably only then, will the idiots who tout illegal immigration and free stuff for all, see the truth. As Mexico’s poverty, corrupt government, gang wars, murderes, lawlessness, and self-deprecating civilization take over the borders and they really get the full iffect of the Hispanic culture settled in.
It’s not necessarily a prediction, but more of a warning than anything else.

Soldier, How illegal immigrants are destroying your country? Are they working in the White House? Are they passing laws in the Congress? Is an illegal immigrant Mayor in your town?
Don’t blame illegal immigrant for your inability to find a job.

Good evening immigrant Francisco, are you hear legally?
1. Illegal immigrants break the law, their first act in my country is lawlessness.
2. Illegal immigrants fill up our schools and hospitals for which they pay little or nothing.
3. Illegal immigrants take jobs for less pay and therby encourage less pay for work done by US citizens. They drive wages downward for everyone.
4. Illegal immigrants often acquire false identities, further breaking the law. Some times the false identity they steal belongs to a living American citizen.
5. Illegal immigrants send a significant portion of wages earned back to Mexico, extracting value from the American economy.
6. Illegal immigrants often committ voter fraud.
7. Illegal immigrants promote poverty, low socioeconomics and lower the bar for all students in public education.
8. Illegal immmigrants force the government to spend huge amounts of money or law enforcement. Border control and any associated crime.
9. Illegal immigrants can bring infections across the border, SARS, TB, EBOLA.
10. Illegal immigrants force our countrymen into the bilingual debate argument and in many cases force the US to spend money on interpreters.
11.
