A generation of athletes will be ruined by letting Lambert play

Last updated: 03/11/10 11:43pm

Editor,

I am appalled to see on the news that Elizabeth Lambert has been reinstated for soccer practices. It only condones and reinforces bad behavior and unsportsmanlike conduct. She should be banned from every and all sports for the rest of her college career. I totally disagree with the decision to reinstate her for practice. What value is this in teaching our children? She is a bully, but that’s OK? Whatever happened to morals and rules of conduct, Ms. Lambert and UNM Athletic Department? It shames me that I graduated from this University.
What if the opponent who got thrown to the ground suffered a concussion or broken bones? What if she was your own daughter? Would you just turn the other cheek? My guess is no, you would not. And how would Ms. Lambert feel if this ever happened (God forbid) to a child of her very own? She is still acting just like a child herself. Grow up, Ms. Lambert.
She is still a disgrace to UNM and UNM sports. UNM athletes are allowed way too much latitude. They are not gods and their treatment is far superior than is the average hard working student. Shame on you.

Judith, While Lambert’s actions were certainly uncalled for, take a closer look at each incident she is involved in. In every “altercation”, the other athlete did something first. In other words, her actions were in response to other unsportsmanlike conduct. Now, whether or not that other athlete realized it (elbowing, grabbing, etc…) is up for debate, and yes her reactions were over the top, but it isn’t as though she went onto the field looking for a fight.

Right. And let’s make sure pot smokers NEVER get out of jail. Organize the lynching parties and round up the sex offenders. Let’s make sure drink drivers never do it again – we’ll shoot them first and ask questions later.

This was a woman playing a game who had an attitude problem. She’s been punished. The punishment is over.

Place in order of priority: Earthquake in Haiti, failing US economy, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Elizabeth Lambert.

Judith, you need to start thinking about the big stuff in life.

I don’t think Lambert deserves the privilege of participating in UNM sports on any level. It is very clear, from day one, that as a student athlete you represent the university and there is a code of conduct. She also seems to have NO awareness of how this impacts our teams in years to come. Guess what Lizzy, it’s not all about you.

Lambert is a bad choice for reinstatement, but New Mexico undoubtedly has a place for her as a politician.

FYI, Pot smokers, sex offenders, drunk drivers even, people who are delinquent in paying their bills continue to face consequences for their actions well after the crime or bad decision/action was made. I somewhat agree with the writer in that she should be banned from sports for a while, maybe she sits out season. However on the other hand, I don’t believe it should be forever. UNM needs to set standards, so these types of things don’t continue to happen. A slap on the hand won’t fix the problem.

As for the comment about the other athlete started it first, well, “there are those who get caught and those who get away with.” Deal with, it called making choices and life. You can be a bigger person by turning the other cheek, or you can act out and pray that you don’t get caught, keeping in mind, that if you’re caught there could be consequences.

J has it right. Too few television outlets showed how Elizabeth Lambert was physically harassed by her opponents before she took action. Off the playing field, both of the other players’ actions would have been defined as sexual assault. Perhaps Ms. Lambert’s responses were strong, but she should not be considered an instigator or a bully.

Interesting how Lambert’s reinstatement comes on the heels of the Baylor’s Brittney Griner’s incident and her punishment. Griner broke Texas Tech’s Jordon Barncastle’s nose after losing her cool in a women’s basketball game last week. The punishment was a two (2) game suspension for Griner. By comparison, Lambert has already been punished enough. Lets move on and root for the Lady Lobos soccer team. I know I will!

Punished Enough?

Really? Lambert was punished enough, huh? The BYU incident happened at the end of the season. Take a closer look, Mr. Jackson, at Griner’s punishment: She was suspended for two games (which personally is not a fitting punishment for a athlete who walks up to another player during a game and punches them in the face, breaking their nose) but Lambert was NOT suspended for ANY games! She was suspended from the team during the “off season” wherein most atheletes do most of their training alone. YEAH, THATS PUNISHMENT ALRIGHT! It doesn’t matter who started what or who did what to whom. She was wrong- end of story! If your speeding on the highway your defense to the cop can’t be, “Well, other people around me were speeding too.” Umm news flash, your still going to get a ticket!

Actually, you won’t. The cop can only ticket one person, so he’s either not going to give the group a ticket, or just the first car he saw. You don’t know wtf you’re talking about.

Get off it, “Punished Enough?”! Lambert’s going to be under a microscope from here on out. She’s taken a rash of cr_p for this AND apologized. Why are we so unwilling to accept apologies in this day and age anyway? What would satisfy you? A pound of flesh? If she were burned at the stake? How about tar and feathers? I know: A Scarlet Letter! I don’t even defend her behavior but I think this rabid anit-Lambert stuff is WAY worse!

And, if Lambert were male, would the reaction be this virulent? I can’t say as I wouldn’t have been tempted to pull the ponytail of that BYU girl if she gave me Chinese underwear, exactly the way she did to Lambert, but we’ll never know. I wasn’t out there and neither were you. I hope Lambert behaves herself from here on out and has learned her lesson. Again, I can’t really defend what she did except to say THANK GOD IT’S OVER!!!! Can we please move on?

Glad she’s playing again. Did wrong, was punished, appologized and accepted the punishment. Time to move on.

This young lady is merely emulating what is, apparently, standard practice at UNM for athletics. WE still have to live with coach Thugsley. Consequently, why this furor over a young lady caught up in the heat of competition?

Does not the “ What’s good for the goose is good for the gander” apply in this case?

Elizabeth Lambert, and for that matter the Baylor basketball player, should be banned from collegiate athletics for life, have their scholarships revoked, and charged with criminal assault. If convicted, they should both be expelled from their respective universities. Both are thugs and should be treated as such. I personally would not let my daughter apply to these two schools if such conduct is tolerated and condoned. If these two weren’t star athletes they would be in jail. This type of double standard is abhorent to me.

Speaking of the double standard … Do any of the judgmental and righteous authors of the blogs get this worked up over rough play by male athletes? Do you remember blown out knees from unnecessary roughness in football? How about stock cars gone airborne because another driver deliberately sent his opponent into the wall? Surely a male soccer player has taken down an opponent by yanking his ponytail, too, but who remembers? I’m no fan of violence, but I want to get ill when I read your rules for women. Leave UNM’s Lambert alone and leave Baylor’s Griner alone. No man ever had to grovel and apologize as much as these two women have to. By the way, watch Griner play sometime. You’ll be a fan, not a critic.

Even better, let’s break her feet so she can’t even practice at home. It has the added benefit that when we all show up at her home with pitchforks and torches shouting “rabble rabble rabble”, she won’t get away easily. That’ll teach her to red card!

The UNM administrators (Schmidly, Harris, Krebs, Locksley, Chavez, Gonzales and Garbiso) are a bunch of immoral corrupt idiots; look at the manner in which the handled Locksley’s assault on his assistant coach and the EEOC claim of sexual harassment and age discrimination charges. They are not role good role models no wonder this happened with Lambert.

Are you kidding me? “A whole generation of athletes will be ruined by letting Lambert play”? Really, ruined?? How does Elizabeth Lambert practicing soccer with her teammates at UNM ruin a whole generation of athletes? I don’t understand your reasoning, Judith. Oh well, I hate it that Elizabeth is such a bully and is still acting like a child, but I hate it even more that we have people in this world like Judith who is so self-righteous. I also hate it that you graduated from the school that is allowing Elizabeth to practice soccer with her team, shame on you! I would have to lie if someone asked me where I graduated from, I certainly wouldn’t tell them I graduated from UNM. How embarrassing for poor Judith.

All these evils would have been cured if we’d just banished Lambert to the zone of purgatory.

Soccer is a rough game, it’s not for sissy football type players. You don’t get to wear pads. Every div 1 team has a few enforcers available to get the message out to the other team. We need Lambert, not only is she a good player, but she helps to keep the crap down from the other teams.

Wake up you whiny types, this is the real world of soccer.

I think Lambert has been punished enough. She deserves a second chance. Why not allow her to learn from her mistake and redeem herself?

If this was men’s basketball no one would even remember what happened!

It’s obvious this incident was over-publicized because it involved female athletes. I’m a male athlete and have seen much worse without anyone batting an eye.

Now, nobody likes to see athletes get hurt or being unsportsmanlike BUT it has to go both ways. Elizabeth retaliated to some pretty nasty stuff, and a video has been shown over and over again outside the context of the game. I think she has been punished more than enough. Nobody was hurt and she seems regretful.

Perhaps people need to ask themselves why they are bent out of shape over this while male athletes routinely get away with acts that are blatant attempts to injure?

I like that Elizabeth plays with a little fire and wish her all the best in the future. I for one am more interested in female soccer as a result! :)
