Are we forever doomed?

Last updated: 09/07/10 2:04am

It was supposed to be different.

It was a fresh start, a new season and a second chance for a bewildered leader.

But 29 minutes and 45 seconds into the 2010 UNM football season, the Lobos found themselves down 59-0 to No. 11 Oregon Ducks. And it didn’t get any better, as the reigning Pac-10 Champions added another 13 more points in the second half for a 72-0 rout of the Lobos.
Either way you look at it, UNM head football coach Mike Locksley is 1-11 Remember the one-game suspension in 2009. By the end of this September, Locksley could I use could carefully add another three losses to his record.

Forget that the team might not win again this month, because remember, that is why they play the games. The Lobos still have to take the field for 11 more contests this season to prove the critics and cynics wrong.

But as a good friend and recent UNM alumnus pointed out at the conclusion of Saturday’s embarrassment: There was “seriously, nothing positive to take out of (that) game.”
And, sadly, he was right.

I personally don’t think the Lobos will look Oregon-bad again this season, but on Saturday against the Ducks, the Lobos mustered 107 total yards and, more importantly, zero points in Locksley’s no-huddle spread offense.

When he was introduced as UNM’s 18th head football coach, Locksley promised his offense would need a third digit on the scoreboard, because they would be putting up massive amounts of points.

In 12 games, the promised spread-the-defense-out-wide-and-use-every-inch-of-the-field offense has averaged 14.9 points per game. Out of 120 FBS schools (formerly Division I football), the Lobos’ offense ranked 103rd in the country last season and averaged 315.33 yards per game.
Because the Lobos continue to rack up numerous three-and-outs, it’s taken a heavy toll on the defense, and it’s why the Lobos have suffered.
UNM had five three-and-outs against a pesky Ducks defense — the Lobos’ shortest possession was 13 seconds (by the way, another three-and-out) in the fourth quarter, not to mention the five giveaways in the game.

It pains me to see great defensive players like Jonathan Rainey, Jaymar Latchison and Carmen Messina never getting off the field.
Through 11 games with Locksley as the head man, UNM has lost by a combined averaged score of 26.7 points. Worse, in 12 games last season, the Lobos gave up 418.67 yards per contest.

This is why we saw a collective failure at Autzen Stadium on Saturday. With no balance, Lobo football is frustrated and in turmoil.
I am not saying this year is over by a long shot, because teams only need to win six games to be bowl-eligible.

But best guess: Lobo fans don’t want to go through another season like 2009, and 2010 looks to be en route to similar results.

Locksley is a joke, a bad one too. Now would be a good time to look at UNM and it’s failing sports program. We certainly are not benefiting in any way, shape, form or fashion from the salary we are shelling out to Locksley. This is so painfully obvious, but the power’s that be become paralyzed at times like this.

Forever doomed, that depends on the perspective one encompasses. From a football perspective, the solution to infinite failure is easily resolved, eliminate Locksley and his partner in crime, Mr. Krebs. Both these incompetents have proven they cannot match even a mediocre athletic genre such as UNM; ergo, their importance and need to the program is superfluous. However, from the vantage point of ethics, morality and greed, the rhetorical comment becomes more relevant. These two clowns, along with President Schmidly, have demonstrated themselves as failures in leadership, honesty and ethics. While it is difficult to idenyify these constant missteps as stupidity or criminality, taxpayers, students, alums and fans must introspectively ask themselves, “ Where does stupidity end and criminality begin?”

While I have my own personal proclivities, each reader must personally evaluate the situation that has evolved over the last few years under the guidance and leadership of these three gentlemen. Realizing the athltics director, and to a lessor degree, the program, has traditionally been a position of corruption and graft at UNM, are we prepared to accept Mr. Krebs as another in the long line of small time crooks or should a line be drawn in the sand regarding these three waqnnabe big time thieves. These three carpetbaggers( In the context of post Civil War carpetbaggers) have drained the state of assets and contributed little or nothing in return.

As noted previously, corruption in New Mexico is as American as Senator Albert Fall and the Teapot Dome. If we are so resigned to accepting the status quo ad infinitum, then, by all means let these three continue in their corrupt incompetent formats. But, if a drastic alteration to “business as usual” is in order, then it’s time to notify the Attorney General, the Governor and the candidates that, “ I’m mad as hell and I won’t take it any longer.”

For good measure, throw in the totally useless and possibly just as corrupt, Board of Regents.

Wow, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The season JUST STARTED. Oregon was National Ranked, #11, and for a reason. They are a darned good team. The fact that the Lobos self-destructed shows that they really need to take a step back and re-assess their training, game plan, and all the players. The coaches need to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. It is a bit early to start chopping off heads.

I am not a Fair-Weather-Fan. I will be going to the games, whether they win one or not. My own college team went 0-10-1 during my soph year and yet the stands were full at every game and fans cheered for every first down. They were loyal fans. I would like to see some Lobos fans there at the stadium supporting their team… win or lose. Either you are a FAN or not.

With the three stooges Schmidly, Krebs and Locks in control there is no other word for UNM athletes and administration but doomed.

As a duck fan, I undertsand your feeling towards to the coach. You will feel a lot better when you watch how Oregon marches on throughout the season to beat up other teams with their powerful offense and mature defense. Actually, your Lobo team is not that bad….

Spread offenses take time and talent to build. They do not happen over one season. Oregon’s offense was built over years under the guidance of head coach Mike Bellotti. He recruited the current head coach Chip Kelly from NH as offensive coordinator precisely because he could take the offense to the next level you see today. Oregon’s defense and condition has been built upon a coaching system 25 years deep. What you see at Oregon can be built at New Mexico with the right coaching staff, fan support, talent and time.

Locksley has brought bad publicity to the university as well as making its football team more pathetic than it possibly was. I want to see just one positive thing he has done, not will do, not can do, has done for this program. Absolutely Nothing!

72-0 sounds like a basketball score so humiliating Locksley can talk but he can’t back up. After seeing ESPN Outside the Lines one can believe anything when it comes to that fool Locksley.

Look around…Texas is down….BYU is down…Oklahoma is just ok….Texas Tech is down and Colorado is down. Maybe the problems are only two fold. Generational and discipline. Coaches wanna be friends…be Coaches…players want a future..academics is still in the back seat. Maybe someone, with some serious wisdom, should step into this program and provide some guidance.
