Obama will have to invent America's next escape plan
Editor,
How did unemployment grow to such devastating levels? The short answer is that for decades, America’s been moving from economic bubble to bubble, and now there are no more bubbles to save us.
The Reagan-era unemployment, which was as bad as ours, was cured by the mass migration from manufacturing to service-sector jobs, moving from tradesmen to hamburger-flippers, from longshoremen to checkout clerks. Later we were rescued from the recession of the early 90s by the dot-com boom, which busted just as the last decade’s real estate explosion took hold. The bill for that came due in September 2008, and here we are in desperate need of magic bullets.
So what’s America’s next angle?
How can President Obama create the 300,000 jobs per month needed to put us back to work? There is no angle, no quick buck, no scheme to satisfy the big investors’ needs to make tons of money, but, at the same time, make tons of money. You see, private equity doesn’t care much about jobs. Only we do. And to become secure again, Americans will have to build things, make things, repair and invent things. Are investors keen on that? Not really. Well then, who does have a plan with that in mind? Only Obama. But that’s socialism, isn’t it?

Hey, I’ve got an idea!
How about we close all of our over-seas military bases (more than 800 worldwide), and remove ALL troops from Iraq and Afghanistan right now? Let’s bring all our beloved sons and daughters home from around the world immediately. We have bankrupted our country by garrisoning the planet for the sake of global hegemony and corporate profits.

We need to end the insanity of global empire building at the expense of democracy at home and save ourselves the agony of imploding from within like all empires inevitably do.
Read Chalmers Johnson’s latest book, DISMANTLING THE EMPIRE, for further background.
Here is a short quote from the author himself: “If…we were to dismantle our empire of military bases and redirect our economy toward productive, instead of destructive, industries; if we maintained our volunteer armed forces primarily to defend our own shores…if we began to invest in our infrastructure, education, health care, and savings, then we might have a chance to reinvent ourselves as a productive, normal nation…”
In his previous book, Nemesis: The Last Days of the American Republic, he states: “Specifically, I believe that to maintain our empire abroad requires resources and commitments that will inevitably undercut our domestic democracy and in the end produce a military dictatorship or its civilian equivalent. The founders of our nation understood this well and tried to create a form of government – a republic – that would prevent this from occurring. But the combination of huge standing armies, almost continuous wars, military Keynesianism, and ruinous military expenses have destroyed our republican structure in favor of an imperial presidency. We are on the cusp of losing our democracy for the sake of keeping our empire…”
We can either do it by (relative) choice like the British, or watch our country destroy itself for the sake of empire, like the Romans. We could save BILLIONS of dollars that could be used constructively for the betterment of all Americans. Free education, free healthcare, free housing, jobs for all…
Yeah, I know. Crazy.
Fiddles, anyone?
(Just for the sake of argument, before the crazies go on about what a communist/socialist/liberal/whatever else Johnson must be, here is his bio: Chalmers Ashby Johnson (born August 6, 1931) is an American author and professor emeritus of the University of California, San Diego. He served in the Korean war, was a consultant for the CIA from 1967–1973, and led the Center for Chinese Studies at the University of California, Berkeley for years. He is also president and co-founder of the Japan Policy Research Institute (now based at the University of San Francisco), an organization promoting public education about Japan and Asia.2)

Amazing! Not one post yet by damian, howel, or any of the other usual neocon, pseudolibertarian dailylobo.com regulars? They must be recovering from their Labor Day festivities, otherwise they would be blasting anything that supports the current administration.
No matter. Sara, things may eventually change for the better as far as manufacturing jobs in the U.S. Just read an article from last week’s Business Outlook in the ABQ Journal, by international trade columnist Jerry Pacheco.

He was reporting on how China has now surpassed Japan to become the world’s 2nd largest economy (as measured by GDP output) after the USA. They did this, as you know, largely by its cheap labor market for mfg. But, he asks, how long can China maintain this competitive advantage? As China’s middle class grows, they will demand higher wages and more material goods. The rapidly growing economic base will require more infrastructure spending by the Chinese government. This will lead to inflation and rising wages in China, and even now some American companies that had exported their mfg to China are thinking of bringing those jobs back to the USA.
One can only hope that will start a trend.

By way of making this a clean trifecta of ahysterical commentary, let me tie this in with today’s announcement of Obama’s apparent determination to let expire the Bush tax cuts (‘trickle down’ always being more descriptive of Ronald Reagan’s continence than of an actual economic phenomenon).
JD – From your lips … etc., but it goes both ways. Cutting off the military will be like yanking the needle out of the arm – better have some methadone at the ready….

Who’s neocon and pseudolibertarian!?!? What does that mean anyways?
JD makes good points above though about military. And there is no such thing as “free” healthcare, housing, or jobs—it all costs something whether you steal to pay for it or not. Historically this sort of philosophy has destroyed countries and lives. The overwhelming evidence clearly says to do just the opposite, luckily most voting Americans have read about it.

One this article was short, sweet, and amazing!
Two it sucks because it’s true
Three I think that by investing in new green energies the U.S. could do some serious damage economic wise. I know not the most practical way of solving the problem, but if you look at it, what else is there that’s new, in the forefront of everyone’s mind and can create relatively high pay jobs that people in the U.S. could fill. Anyways, just a thought.
