Lobo belittles instead of supporting readership

Last updated: 01/25/12 6:11am

Editor,

I find it offensive and rather repulsive that you would allow a comic strip that aims to stereotype fraternities, but, most importantly, one that grossly undermines the issue of rape.

As a member of a fraternity at the UNM campus, I can assure you that the Greek community at UNM does not take the issue of rape lightly, and we work rather hard to challenge such negative stereotypes that are made by ignorant and divisive individuals such as your cartoonist.

Individuals seem to be OK with making it a comedic issue without taking into account the potential damage that it can have on an individual who has gone through such an atrocious act. I can assume that for someone who has lived it, rape is neither a joke nor material for newspaper comedy.

It seems rather ignorant and, quite frankly, biased to assume that every man who joins a fraternity automatically becomes an alcoholic and a sexual assailant by association.

Joining a fraternity has quite the opposite effect. Our aim is to transform young men into gentlemen who, at the central core of their being, learn how to respect authority, one another, and, most importantly, treat every woman as a lady, therefore creating a more productive and well-rounded member of society who readily answers at the first call of civic and moral duty.

It is sad to see that you overlook all of the good that we do on campus and only focus on publishing items that paint us in a negative light in order to get a “juicy” story.

I challenge you and your staff to be present and write articles about our philanthropic endeavors, such as our cancer dinner, which raised over $9,000 for the Cancer Center; Sigma Chi’s fight night benefiting our veterans, which raised over $10,000; Chi Omega’s sponsoring of a child at the Make-A-Wish Foundation; Pi Phi’s effort to reduce illiteracy; Alpha Chi’s “Omega Man” to raise awareness about domestic violence, which raised over $4,000; Omega Delta Phi’s ongoing support of C.A.S.A.; or our upcoming Greek Week philanthropy, which is expected to raise over $10,000 in just a week.

Maybe by publishing the positive things that happen around our campus, rather than attacking student organizations, our ASUNM president, our University president, or our Athletics department, you will be able to turn the reputation of the Daily Lobo from a substandard publication into something that people enjoy reading and that actually brings our campus community closer.

After all, you wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for the student fees that I, as well as my fellow students, whom you so readily attack, pay to the University.

Come on, brother, people in general (not just the Lobo) will stop talking bad about frats when you stop providing the material. Maybe frats don’t make people alcohol abusers and sexual assailants “by association” – maybe they attract people who are inclined toward that behavior in the first place and make it seem normal. I don’t know. What I do know is – just as you indicate in your letter – that you and your frat brothers care more about “challenging negative stereotypes” by crying foul every time someone tells the truth about you than by changing what the truth is. You want our respect? Earn it.

A timely letter consider the Klan caricature of Newt Gingrich in today’s DL. As a person who can’t stand the politics of either party, I am looking forward to both sides panties in a knot and the epic crying to follow, and the many opportunities for them to be trolled over this.

Rape is not some thing to laugh at, even if it was a clown being raped. A clown with the big red nose, the honking horn and a suit with multicolored polka dots all over it. But, sometimes humor is the right context to get conversation started when the subject is tough. In this context maybe Tabone was trying to get people to engage in conversation about frats and open up exchange to work on bettering frats, and there perceptions in the public eye. Or maybe he’s just an epic troll? I’m hoping for the former, but just as happy with the latter.

“treat every woman like a lady“? REALLY?? Wow. How very… quaint.

Michael Ramirez are the only two truly intelligent and funny political cartoonists currently at work. If the dl had any sense of balance it would post these at least a couple times per week, but . . .
Mr. Manriquez you have run headlong into one of the problems with the dl, its pernicious anti-American, leftard bias. It sucks, but at least one knows where one stands when contrasted against the schtoooopidity posted in the columns, letters, and cartoons. Note the idiots who posted in response to your letter, cases in point.

Left leaning so-called journalists are a caricature of themselves in a failing field—their predecessors have jacked it up for them and they are no longer trusted to be objective, indeed, they believe it is their job to spin and steer and guide the un-enlightened masses. Tools! Real journalism is dead, all that is left is agenda. Thank God for the internet.

Pan-Hell-enic,
You are entitled to your opinion. However, I think you are making a very bold statement and assumption by stating that fraternities attract gentlemen that are more inclined toward alcholic and sexually abusive behavior. As you stated, you don’t know the truth. So, maybe instead of speaking out against fraternities and sororities all the time you should get to know some of the individuals involved, such as Mr. Manriquez. I can personally say that I trust the men in fraternities more than I trust other men on the UNM campus. I have never been disrespected by a fraternity man and I only wish I could say the same about other gentlemen on campus.

I respect your opinion but I think you are mistaken. I would challege you to get to know fraternity men before you speak out against them because it’s clear that you don’t know what you are talking about.

@ Smiley,
I don’t think I maligned any particular frat guys (“gentlemen,” as you’d have it). Instead, I voiced opposition to the “Greek” system as a whole, which I believe (and many along with me) has no real meaningful role at the university and has a tendency – as a system – to encourage alcohol abuse, etc. and to place higher value on university as a place to watch basketball and party than as a place of learning. It is a systemic feature, which is why it shouldn’t be condoned by the university. Frats (and the “Greek” system) masquerade as places where positive values are fostered, but I think we can all admit that that is a pretty thin cover.

I think Pan-Hell-enic is just a little bitter about not getting a bid…

Ah, here come the ad hominem attacks from the frat rats. Only someone who thinks that life in a frat is appealing would say that. For what it’s worth, I never wanted to or tried to join a frat (and so was never denied). And I’m not particularly bitter about anything. I’m just an opinionated guy who cares about the university as a place of learning (which puts me at odds with the “Greeks”).

Mr. Pan-Hell-enic, your argument makes no sense, and just like the guy who did the comic strip you are looking like an idiot. Your argument that you “care about the university as a place of learning” and that is why you are at odds with greeks is proposterous! Greeks care just as much if not more about the univeristy being a place to attain mental culture. But, unlike you, they also care about helping out the community. When the university needs students to show up to something, they ALWAYS rely on Greeks to be there . The combined monetary and man-power hours that the Greeks provide to the community is unsurpassed and we are actually proactive about many issues that we are passionatee about. Stop being a TROLL, get off your rear and do something for the community instead of bashing something that you will never understand or have the opportunity to be a part of. If you think being Greek is irrelevant, you should consider that 85% of all CEO’s of MAJOR companies and close to 75% of congress are members of a Greek lettered organization. So while you sit here and complain, we will be busy working our rear off so you can recieve goverment handouts!

I can attest that fraternities at UNM better their members; my fraternity has helped enrich my parent’s morals and scholastic beliefs. To join a fraternity here on this campus one must have a minimum GPA of 2.7 to even be considered for recruitment. However someone with a 2.7 GPA will most likely be turned away until their GPA has risen. Once accepted the student must maintain a credible scholastic average to continue their membership, and if a brother is slipping up in school then help is given. Most of the fraternities on this campus are either in the range or above the All Men’s Average for UNM. I take pride in that.
Since we are in an institution for higher learning I would hope fellow students would research issues before making assumptions about us. Men who enjoyed the pursuit of knowledge and higher education founded most if not all the fraternities nationally, and we continue this belief within our own academic careers at UNM. My fraternity has helped push me to strive for excellence and nothing less. I would encourage people who disagree to go to the Greek Life office and look for these statistics. I can say that I am very grateful for the opportunities that have been put in my path because of fraternity I joined.

That’s a real positive thing. “The people who buy politicians and the politicians who are all bought were members of fraternities”

Thanks for clearing that up. Financial rape must become a much more compelling urge after college.

This guy has been around for well over 20 years. He was the cartoonist for the Lobo back in the late 80’s. And his act was tiresome then.

He has always boldly declared, without any proof other than “his opinion,” that: – all police practice brutality and are racist – all UNM varsity athletes are stupid, criminally-inclined, don’t do anything to earn a degree, and are just generally bad people. – all members of the Greek system are rich, White, mean snobs. – all people whose politics are even slightly to the right of Hillary Clinton are evil, rich people who aren’t entitled to have their opinions, either heard or just kept to themselves.

The entire campus, not just the ones who think this kind of juvenile garbage is cool, deserves better from its Daily Lobo editorial cartoonists.
