We are not monsters but the world is sad

The real benefit of drugs is not in the drugs themselves. It is a powerful epiphany that comes from changing perspective from a spoon-fed life into a personal one.

Oh, what truths lie in murky hipster depths?

While his friends assured me his name was Chris, “Slade” was a man of carefully constructed parts. “Slade?” I repeated as I shook his hand, wondering if I had gotten it right. ‘Slade,’ confirmed the thick beard, thick flannel, thick black-rimmed glasses and thin smile.

For Your Ears

One month of summer gone! You’re wasting time! There’s so much music, so much of it is completely terrible. But you can relax, Daily Lobo is here to calmly lay down hits and highlights for July in the soft, soothing voice that only a mother can provide.

HAVING A SOCIAL LIFE A NECESSARY EVIL

Living with people is hard, but necessary. Humans are social animals with family, friends, classmates, co-workers, acquaintances, enemies and lovers. Some of these relationships are beneficial and intentional. Others are the by-product of being a social animal who is seemingly unable to separate itself from the relationships that unfold as a result of being defined outside yourself.

Montana: Isn’t it nothing but brown and dust?

The day before I arrived on the Flathead Indian Reservation of Western Montana, the small town of Charlo had its Mission Mountain Testicle Festival. “Can we not talk about it?” said Tim, one of the Christian biologists I met who worked on the Flathead Res.
“It’s a bull!

The ugly is truly unique

There is one word that comes to mind when trying to describe “La Fea: A FlamenChoreoMyth.” It’s often overused, but it carries weight in this case.

UNM cartoonist hits it big

Cartoonist Stephen McCranie has a pointy, kind face, and is dismayingly tall. His name is just as unwieldy.

It’s a Magical Masterpiece

It is appropriate that a piece of incredible magical realism can simply be referred to as magical. Literally everything is in place for this piece.

Stand out in an audition

I don’t know if I’ve gotten better at auditioning in the years I’ve been an actor. You certainly never stop learning about acting — new tools, methods, head games, and modes of attack and thought.

Delete your profile, or perish trying

There is no shortage of reasons to hate Facebook. The time sink, the obsession; the passive-aggressive atmosphere; the lazy cowardice disguised as social communication; the freedom and complete ease to stalk and be stalked; the way every Facebook user is targeted, and their information sold and used to keep the depraved cycle working. Facebook is like high school never ended.

Old play gets new shake

William Shakespeare’s stories, indeed, are universal in any age.  Thus it’s no surprise why their settings are constantly being shifted to fill the axiom of “giving the people what they want in a way they don’t expect.” And maybe those people will even learn something about it.

Coen style not for theater

Three words jump out at you when looking at Aux Dog’s newest production, “Offices.” Those three words: “By Ethan Coen.” Yeah, that Coen.

An unsettling challenge

“It’s a seven-pound stuffed sopapilla, dude.”
“I realize that, Zach.” Zach Gould was the photographer who first embarked on the Albuquerque Food Challenge project.

Blackout doesn’t just put on plays.

Theatrical mixed bag right before your eyes

It’s one-act time again at the Vortex Theatre. In an annual competition, the Vortex selected from nationally submitted works (more than 200 this year alone) to show the eight best in a celebratory exhibition of playwriting talents. The entire showcase is called “Don’t Blink,” and each 10-minute act boasts a local director.

Frank endures Hitler’s horrors

Talking about the Holocaust is not easy. This is especially true for those who survived it. Yet James Still’s play “And Then They Came for Me: Remembering the World of Anne Frank” tells the naked horror of World War II with three powerful stories.

‘Othello’ villain seduces crowd

Aux Dog Theatre is back for round two in its 2011 season, tackling one of Shakespeare’s most famous tragedies, “Othello,” with the thunder and human horror it deserves.  For those who didn’t read “Hamlet” in school, the title character is a Moorish general in the service of the armies of Venice (making him an Arab or North African — and certainly an outsider). He is happily married and trusted by all, except for his right-hand man, Iago, who seeks to destroy Othello’s marriage, trust and mind. Othello is the most “tragic” of Shakespeare’s tragedies.

Remodeling ‘Shakespeare’s house’

Because of sadomasochism-style woman-breaking themes, “The Taming of the Shrew” has been controversial since its inception.
It’s also why the play has seen a lot of light around Albuquerque in the past few years.
