ASUNM votes for free condoms

ASUNM voted to install free condom distribution points around the campus in an effort to promote safe sex. Sen. Greg Golden said the resolution reminded him of his freshman year at UNM. “They used to have more access to condoms,” he said. “I remember when I was a freshman they were, well, everywhere.” ASUNM Sen. Jaimee Perea, a community health major, introduced the resolution to have condom distribution points at the Student Health Center, at registers in the SUB and in the SRC commons. Perea said the distribution goal is to help curb the prevalence of STDs.

Retirees face benefit cuts

UNM’s retiree health benefits may face some cuts. Helen Gonzales, vice president of Human Resources, announced in a UNM Today column the creation of a task force that will work to cut health insurance costs. Gonzales didn’t respond to repeated interview requests, but said in her column that UNM’s unfunded liability for retiree health insurance was $131.9 million in 2009, up from $91.3 million in 2007. “Given this increase in costs, UNM needs to reevaluate the retiree health plan,” Gonzales wrote.

Provost puts degree programs on chopping block

Eight UNM degree programs are in danger of being cut after the Provost’s Office flagged them for possible removal in an effort to reduce costs.
Deputy Provost Richard Holder said the programs were selected based on a set of characteristics. “Academic degree programs were evaluated for up to 15 characteristics, such as number of majors, has the number declined by 10 percent or more, number of degrees granted, total number of credit hours produced, etc …,” he said.

Potential retirees angry at proposal

Proposed changes to retirement plans have UNM faculty scrambling in the face of diminishing benefits, higher costs and a longer time before retirement. The New Mexico Educational Retirement Board released a draft proposal of changes to retirement policies that would affect the University and public school faculty and staff on the plan.

With UNM Peace Studies and American Studies’ support, Palestinian-American Ali Abunimah spoke at the SUB, though the departments received letters from the Jewish Federation of New Mexico and the UNM Hillel that called Abunimah’s talk anti-Semitic. Sam Sokolove, JFNM executive director who wrote the letter, said Abunimah’s support of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement is troubling.

ASUNM: Don't demolish

ASUNM passed a resolution against the demolition of the Santa Ana dorms Wednesday night. The possible demolition would displace 177 residents over winter break, who would then be placed in other dormitories.
