Column: ASUNM prioritizing parking lot safety

Safety. A big word, carrying a lot of weight and meaning for each student, staff, and faculty member at the University of New Mexico. How do we promote a safe yet open campus? Over the course of the past year, ASUNM has taken a special interest in the safety of each student on campus. We want to make sure that YOU feel both comfortable and at home at UNM, and we have taken some big steps towards creating a safer environment for YOU. Each year, ASUNM is able to ask for capital outlay money from the Legislature. We focus on areas throughout campus that may need renovation, remodeling or revamping explicitly in the interest of students.

Column: Student Success Week to Help Students Achieve Success

Why do we "do" college? Is it for the countless networking opportunities? Maybe for the new friends and the good times? Or could it be for the extracurricular and intermural sports that are offered? Arguably, as students we could say we enjoy college for all of these reasons, but we "do" college, or attend college, for a very specific reason: to gain an education in order to be successful in the world.

Column: Cherry Reel Film Festival a great success

As both the ASUNM leadership, and as judges of the Cherry Reel Film Festival, we are incredibly impressed with the professionalism and creativity that our students show. ASUNM prides itself on its ability to constantly work harder and attempt to find a plethora of ways to serve the student population. This past weekend, the Southwest Film Center did just that. The Center held its annual film festival, that has been renamed the Cherry Reel Film Festival, Saturday night. With 30 original submissions, 20 of which were screened, and a newly acquired sponsorship from Canon, which provided a Canon camera to the first-place entry, this festival proved to be a big success.

Column: Student Fee Review Board reviews allocation of YOUR fees

There are so many acronyms in student government that, honestly, even I sometimes get confused. I mean, ASUNM stands for Associated Students of the University of New Mexico, but it is such a mouthful that we just tend to stick to the five letters, even when someone might not know what ASUNM means. SFRB is one of those acronyms that is tossed around in conversations and student government talk without ever being explained. Seeing as these are your student fees, I would like to explain SFRB to you.

Column: The Traditions of Homecoming not lost in College

In high school, Homecoming was always something many students looked forward to. The week before Homecoming was an eventful time to celebrate pride in the school and the football team, elect the Homecoming Court and, of course, participate in the Homecoming dance. These traditions were something that many of us took part in, at least to some degree, and were sad to see end. Well, there's no need to fret because the University of New Mexico has some wonderful Homecoming traditions as well.

ASUNM column: Big opportunities to get involved this week

Like we promised at the beginning of the year, Alex and I write these weekly columns for the main purpose of being transparent and keeping all students informed of the different events and endeavors that ASUNM is taking on. This week is a VERY heavy week for ASUNM, which means that it is all the more reason for YOU to participate and get involved!

Column: Emerging Lobo Leaders shows underclassmen the scope of campus life

Well, as freshmen, most students are coming from high school backgrounds of sports or involvement that aren’t plausible in a college setting. Students who were never involved now want college to be more than just going to class, but UNM is HUGE, so how can anyone know where to start? There are more than 300 chartered student organizations, Residence Life and Student Housing , 25 sororities and fraternities combined, Athletics and, of course, student government. Where do you begin?

Column: Don't just vote - you are ASUNM

Who honestly cares about ASUNM? What do they even do (aside from wearing bright colors and harassing people twice a year asking them to vote)? We know that student government can seem irrelevant, and the work we do sometimes doesn’t quite reach the student body in the way we hope it to. But we wouldn’t stand out there in heels, getting sunburns and creepily approaching strangers, if we didn’t believe in something bigger.
