Festival highlights fresh music genre

For some music fans the term 'electronic music' evokes memories of dancing to techno mixes at a local nightclub. For others, it refers to an experimental composition form. After more than a year without, UNM staff members will once again be able to extend their roles on campus and become students as well as employees, thanks to a program that has been reinstated by Human Resources. Staff as Students is a program that offers staff members the opportunity to take classes at UNM.

NM may be next hot spot for films

In the below-freezing temperatures of Monday and Tuesday night, many UNM students braved the cold to attend a wild techno party. But it wasn't the music or the dancing that students savored, but rather, it was a taste of show business. Students attended the rave to appear as extras in a movie being filmed on the Zia Pueblo.

'Cat in the Hat' falls flat

A modern movie version of a Dr. Seuss book has been delivered - but at a cost. Like each adult looks at the joys of youth, some magic is inevitably lost. "The Cat in the Hat" opened last Friday at cinemas all over the nation, but despite a great cast and a barrel of laughs, it was not worth the anticipation.

Life often imitates art. The horror on television screens during the nightly news is just as tragic as the scripted drama of films. So the argument is that reality takes its cues from the misery presented in the media. "The Garage Dialogues" performed by the members of OmniRootz, a theater company, proves dramatic effect is not less heart-wrenching when real life takes the stage.

Signed languages not easy out for students

Since signed languages were officially recognized as foreign languages in post-secondary institutions, many UNM students have looked at the subject as an easy way to complete language components. The estimations about the course's simplicity, however, are incorrect, said Sherman Wilcox, associate professor and chairman of the Signed Language department.

Black storms Duke City

In his weekly spot on "The Daily Show," Lewis Black peppers political commentary with comedy. These two components of his routine may seem incompatible, but for Black, modern politics and comedy are one and the same - both are likely to be ridiculous. While Black is making audiences laugh with his political observations, he said he finds the state of affairs in America slightly less amusing.
