Governor's office displays hipocrasy on education issues

Editor,

The Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, along with 51 individuals (including parents and children), has sued the State of New Mexico. The lawsuit claims that Governor Susana Martinez’s educational initiatives have interfered with students’ rights to a sufficient education.

As the case now moves forward in District Court, the Martinez administration responds with disappointment that the case was “brought by interests from out of state.”

What?

This seems more than laughable coming from a governor whose greatest failure has been the ill-advised and disastrous appointment of a secretary of education from Florida. Never mind that she is so ill-prepared to lead our education system that she has never been confirmed by the Legislature.

The administration’s response makes me wonder if they all have amnesia in Santa Fe. This is the same governor who fired most of the Behavioral Health providers in New Mexico in order to bring in Arizona corporate providers.

Never mind that there has been no evidence presented showing any financial wrongdoing on the part of the ousted providers. The end result of the Arizona takeover has been the massive upheaval in the behavioral health system, and a disruption of services.

The governor and her mouthpiece, Public Education Department spokesman Larry Behrens, should really think twice before opening their mouths and spewing such hypocrisy.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey Paul
