Electric cars to assist security

UNM police and security officers are banking on a $30,000 investment they hope will help them to better patrol and secure the campus. The cars, Chrysler Gems, are powered entirely by 72-volt electric motors that can travel as far as 40 miles on a single charge and can go as fast as 25 miles per hour.

Police examine alleged rape case

University police have collected physical evidence from a local man in connection with an alleged sexual assault that occurred at an SRC room early Saturday morning. According to the affidavit for a search warrant, the victim was assaulted when she went to throw up in a shared bathroom during her birthday party at the Student Residence Center.

Bike thefts plague campus

Bike thefts on UNM's campus are up this semester. Not just up - drastically up. According to UNMPD figures, 67 bikes were reported stolen from campus between Aug. 1 and the middle of October this year. During that same time period in 2002, 10 bikes were reported stolen to the UNM Police Department.

Finance manager eager to begin job

UNM's new director of Resource Management will be leaving the sunny beaches of Hawaii's Big Island for the dry, high-altitude climate of Albuquerque. And he actually seems to be happy about it. Scared and trapped outside of a locked door at UNM's Science and Technology Park, Stephanie Johnston carefully recorded the license plate of a pickup truck belonging to a man she says was exposing himself. In an anxious attempt to report the crime and ensure her safety, Johnston called APD and was transferred to the UNM Police Department at about 3:30 p.

Attempt to make dye backfires

The UNM Chemistry department got a brief scare Wednesday after Clark Hall was evacuated following a small, contained "flash fire" in one of the building's research laboratories. An experiment by two graduate and a postdoctoral student involving combustible materials caused the fire.

Insults hide behind anonymity

There is nothing more pathetic than a performer who insults people while remaining in comfortable anonymity behind a toy puppet dog. The only thing that could be sadder is a CD featuring that toy puppet dog.
