Men's Soccer: Lobo defender Aaron Herrera headed to 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup

Over 500 players from 24 countries are taking part in the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Korea this summer — and UNM's Aaron Herrera was lucky enough to be selected to participate. Herrera, a defender for the UNM men’s soccer team, has been working with the U.S. National Team for a while. His latest achievement happened only a few months ago when he was part of the roster that took the United States’ first CONCACAF title at the U-20 level by taking down the Honduras’ team 5-3 on penalty kicks. “It was just crazy being the first team to ever do it,” said the Las Cruces native. “There are so many great players that have been through the U-20 who are playing on the full national team now that also went through the same experience we did. None of them ever won it, so knowing that our team was the first to win it is kind of crazy.”

November of 2015 was one of the most difficult times of his life, but today he’s figured out he can overcome anything with a positive attitude and the love of his family. Devon Williams joined the UNM men’s basketball team during the 2012-13 season. He redshirted that season and only appeared in five games. The following year, he started in 30 games. He scored in double figures in seven different occasions, had 48 offensive rebounds and led his team in blocks in six different games. Things were looking up for him, but his world shook up at the beginning of his junior season.

Weather conditions in Colorado forced Saturday’s game to be cancelled, which officially ended the Lobos’ spring season with a 1-3 record. The Lobos played twice at home and twice on the road. Their first result was a 2-1 loss to Southern Methodist, a game played at the FC Dallas Complex in Texas. New Mexico bounced back the following weekend to take a 2-1 victory at Grand Canyon University. But after a month-long break, the Lobos once again found themselves with a 2-1 loss, this time to the Air Force Academy. Last weekend, the Lobos ended on the wrong side of a shutout, losing 1-0 to the Colorado School of Mines.

A mistake in the second half led to a 1-0 loss for the UNM men’s soccer team on Saturday afternoon. The Lobos hosted the Colorado School of Mines in their second-to-last game before they wrap up the spring season. New Mexico has posted a 1-3 record so far, and although the team will finish with a losing record, the Lobos are trying to stay positive. “I think it depends on how you view the game. We’ve looked at the spring as a progression,” UNM head coach Jeremy Fishbein said. “A lot of the things we set out to do, we did an extremely good job. I thought the run of play, our ball movement and in terms of creating opportunities, we were fantastic.”

Spring showcase, clinic allows Lobo fans to interact with football team

The UNM football team stepped into University Stadium on Saturday for the program’s third annual Spring Showcase. Gates opened at 10:30 a.m. as an estimated 1,500 fans came to watch the Lobos go to work. The event showcased what the players have been working on during the offseason, but also to give fans an opportunity to renew or purchase tickets for the fall season, as well purchase Lobo merchandise.

Men's soccer: Lobos look to gain experience this spring

The UNM men’s soccer team is back in home territory this weekend for another spring match, this time against the Colorado School of Mines. The Lobos are coming off a 2-1 loss to the Air Force Falcons, which happened last Saturday during their first home game of the spring season. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Taos but a last minute change allowed the Lobos to play at the Robertson Practice Facility, their usual practice field.

Men's Basketball: New coach welcomes a familiar face to coaching staff

Although it’s been less than two weeks since the University of New Mexico hired Paul Weir to coach the men's basketball team, there have already been a few changes in the program. Coaching Staff On Thursday, Weir announced the hiring of Marc Hsu as an assistant coach. Hsu, just like Weir, is formally from NMSU. "Marc is one of the best young recruiters in the country," Weir said on a statement. "I watched him build a championship team at Bakersfield and then he helped form one of the best mid-major recruiting classes in the country this past year at New Mexico State.”

Green Issue: Green screen special effects make the impossible possible

From daily newscasts to sci-fi films, green screens can be seen — or perhaps more accurately, not seen — in many forms of media. A green screen is a special effects tool that helps combine multiple visuals into a single image. The technical term for this process is compositing, and it all starts with an equation: A + B (1-a). “A” represents the foreground plate, which is the image that one wants to keep. “B” represents the background plate, which is simply the background to be added. To keep the desired parts from “B,” it must be multiplied by the inverse alpha, represented by “A.” “It isn’t the math part that’s hard, it’s the problem solving that’s hard,” said Paris Premdas, a senior interdisciplinary film and digital media major.

Men's Soccer: Schedule change allows UNM to host Air Force

After a month-long break, the UNM men’s soccer team is ready to spring back into action. On the original schedule, the Lobos were going to hit the road to take on the Air Force Academy on Saturday. However, the scheduled was recently changed and the Falcons will travel to Albuquerque, New Mexico instead. The match will be one of just two home matches the Lobos have scheduled for the spring. Both of them will be played at the UNM Robertson practice facility instead of the UNM soccer complex, where all fall season matches are played.
