In four years on the New Mexico softball team, seniors Krissy Fortner and Chelsea Johnson had never experienced a win over rival New Mexico State. That changed on Tuesday with a 13-4, mercy rule win over the Aggies in Las Cruces.

It’s a rare occasion that there is a moment of calm during a basketball game, especially one that is as close as the game the University of New Mexico women’s basketball team played against Wyoming last Wednesday. But the fleeting moments prior to a free throw attempt allow the players and fans a taste of that. A hush falls over the arena as everyone waits for the shot, and it is in that moment that I captured this series of what I’m calling “Free Throw Portraits.” Through these photos, I hope to capture the focus and composure that these players show in the final minutes of an intense game during one of the few moments when all eyes in the arena are on them, when they step to the line, with teammates and opponents around them.

For the University of New Mexico softball team (2-11), Saturday’s game started off differently. With a lead. However, it wasn’t meant to be for the Lobos on the second day of the UC Riverside Classic, as the Lobos fell to Montana (2-10), as the Grizzlies used a three run sixth inning to take a lead they would hold until the final out.

Sam Gleadle has signed a professional contract with Reno 1868 of the USL, the club announced on Monday. Gleadle graduated from the University of New Mexico in December following a four year career with the Lobos.
