The Lobos’ football team has taken the field for 94 years, and not once have they entered a season as the betting-odd favorites to win the conference, until now. After hiring Head Coach Jason Eck, who led the team to just their sixth season with nine or more wins in program history and a trip to the Rate Bowl – their first bowl appearance since 2016 – the Lobos became one of the nation's top stories in all of college football.

OPINION: Bobbleheads of the week

Where there’s a victor, there’s a loser, and sometimes, certain athletes contribute to their team’s shortcomings. These athletes are favorably called bobbleheads. Oklahoma City Thunder: Chet Holmgren Early in the playoffs, the Oklahoma City Thunder looked to be in prime position to repeat as champions. They had the best record in the NBA and came into the Western Conference Finals 8-0 in the postseason, sweeping both the Los Angeles Lakers and the Phoenix Suns. However, throughout the regular season, one team seemed to have their number, and that happened to be the team they would have to face with a trip to the NBA finals up for grabs.

REVIEW: UNM staging of “Ashes” is unsettling in a very correct way

There are productions that ask to be understood, and there are productions that alter the conditions under which understanding takes place. “Ashes” is one of the latter. Presented by the University of New Mexico Department of Theatre and Dance, “Ashes,” directed by professor Alejandro Tomás Rodriguez, ignites an atmosphere where thought itself is slowed, through its repetitions, silences, fractured exchanges, visuals and soundscapes.

UNM to launch campus-wide guidelines on ethical AI use

This fall, the University of New Mexico AI Steering Committee will be launching campus-wide guidelines and best practices to address aspects of artificial intelligence use that are considered “urgent,” including ethics and academic integrity, according to College of University Libraries & Learning Sciences Dean and AI Steering Committee Chair Mark Emmons.  The AI Steering Committee is made up of students, staff and faculty from across campus with a variety of expertise in artificial intelligence, and formed because of the large amount of AI use on campus without a coordinated set of policies or strategies to follow, Emmons said.   The committee was charged in late February by Interim Provost Barbara Rodriguez and will integrate AI efforts around campus with both a long-term and a short-term path, according to Emmons, who said the long-term path will involve a town hall that gathers students, faculty, staff and any interested stakeholders to supply guidance that may ultimately end up in policies.

Baseball: Lobos take season finale from Aggies

The University of New Mexico Lobos baseball team returned to Santa Ana Star Field one last time for a fourth matchup in the Rio Grande rivalry against the New Mexico State University Aggies. Despite the Aggies taking the first three games throughout the season, the Lobos would win the finale on May 12 by a final score of 12-6, sending Lobo fans home happy this time. This contest saw New Mexico State draw first blood, as Aggies designated hitter Aidan Taclas drove in a run with a double in the first inning, but Lobo starting pitcher Cooper Corkrean hunkered down and held the Aggies to just the one run in that inning. Promptly in the home half with runners at the corners, Lobo third baseman Akili Carris tied the game at 1-1 with a sacrifice fly.

UNM needs more healthy food options, students say

Some students eating lunch at the Student Union Building during finals week this spring said that the University of New Mexico needs more healthy food and fresh fruit options available on campus.  The Student Union Building has multiple food vendors, including Chick-fil-A, Blake’s Lotaburger, Mandalay Express, Subway, Dion’s Pizza and Freshens, as well as a rotating local food vendor that switches each semester and a “grab-and-go” market downstairs. Junior Kieren Sanchez said that while UNM has a lot of food offerings, she doesn’t think that there are a lot of healthy options.
