Slates don’t reflect all UNM students
April 25Since this is my first year at UNM, I did not know a lot about ASUNM. Last semester, I didn’t really pay attention to the election, but this time it was impossible to ignore. Everywhere I went I was assaulted by chalked up sidewalks proclaiming The People or The Connection slates. On Election Day, we were all bombarded by handouts telling us who to vote for or were bribed with candy handouts. I was so annoyed that I decided to look into these two slates. What I found was disturbing.
Tips on handling the finals frenzy
Craig A. Butler | April 25Ready for the semester to end and have all these classes behind you? Ready to end this academic drudgery so you can lean back, put up your feet and congratulate yourself for a job well done? There’s just one problem: getting through these last couple of weeks alive.
If Lobo is the `voice' of our campus, get rid of Reynalds
April 24This is a letter regarding Jeremy Reynalds' column on Friday.
Porn result of twisted society
Maria SanchezTraynor | April 24(U-WIRE) FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Anti-pornography protesters probably kick themselves in the butt when they realize the most successful way to make money on the Internet is through sex sites.
Choosing to die should be a personal decision
April 24Jeremy Reynalds' comments about euthanasia are systematically wrong.
Controversial `Mary' is only art
April 23Editor, I would like to know what the big debate is about Mary and her Bikini. I, for one, think it is a beautiful interpretation of one woman's view of the Virgin Mary.
Stand up for your religious beliefs, do not be silenced
April 23Editor, It is truly a sad indication of the times and an example of people's ignorance when someone who holds a biblical-based Christian worldview is labeled a "bigot" whose opinions are considered "mentally challenged drivel." This is, however, the opinion of many people, including James Burbank.
Cincinnati police not as racist as columnist thinks
April 23Editor, I realize that the column "Only We Can Prevent Riots" in the April 16 Daily Lobo was pulled off the wire, but that doesn't excuse the Lobo's editors from responsibility for printing such inflammatory garbage.
Minor sports unnecessary
April 23Editor, On April 24, the Faculty Senate will consider a resolution in support of the reinstatement of three UNM men's intercollegiate athletics programs that were cut in 1999: gymnastics, swimming and wrestling. The Faculty Senate should vote against this resolution for at least three reasons.
April 20 is not a day to fear
Craig A. Butler | April 23April 20. A day of bad news if ever there was one. Columbine, the day after the Oklahoma City and Waco. It's even Adolf Hitler's birthday.
Union members need not worry about raises
April 23Editor, Following the March 22 election to establish a union for education support staff, a number of rumors and concerns have spread around campus.
Lobo ignores discretion by publishing Reynalds' rants
April 20Editor, Regarding Jeremy Reynalds' bigoted rantings, it is evident that, in this era of political correctness, the only criteria for people to have a column in the Daily Lobo is that they are breathing and they persevere. Content, the editor's stock in trade, has been rendered politically extinct.
UNM should join the boycott of World Bank
April 20Editor, This is an open letter to President Bill Gordon and Julie Weaks, vice president for business and finance:
Money should not be the main goal in life
April 19One glance, and I already know who this person is. The most overused question on campus — “What’s your major?” — has just been asked and the response is, “I don’t know. I just know whatever it is, I want to make money and lots of it.”
Plan shows UNM doesn't get it
Richard Berthold | April 19The administration's Strategic Planning Task Force has just issued summaries of the strategic directions subcommittees' reports, and it is clear that, this time around, the administration is being much more subtle (more platitudes and meaningless jargon) than it was with the ill-fated UNM 2000.
A ballot with clarity would get more students to vote
April 19As an experienced voter who has been reading ballots for 10 years, I have seen many confusing ways in which proposed amendments have been written up.
