Men drop another home soccer game, women snap skid

He wasn’t speechless after Friday night’s nonconference finale against Davis, but New Mexico men’s soccer coach Jeremy Fishbein found the Lobos’ third straight home loss difficult to explain. UNM, which begins its first Conference USA contest Monday at Marshall, surrendered a goal late in the second half in 2-1 loss to UC Davis.

The New Mexico women’s soccer team will face off at home against Rice today at 6 p.m. and Michigan State at noon on Sunday. UNM has a 1-3-0 record after a tough weekend against two highly ranked teams, No. 1 North Carolina and No. 12 Duke.

Texas Tech takes tight win

Cassie Ulrich didn’t expect to walk into a firing zone. The sophomore goalie for the New Mexico women’s soccer team made seven saves against Texas Tech, but her efforts didn’t save the Lobos from losing their home opener 1-0 on Friday night.

For a brief time, Kyle Venter wondered if he had made the right choice in attending UNM. Venter, a fifth-year senior defender on the men’s soccer team, had been one of the best players on the Aurora, Colo. Smoky Hill High School team

It’s nothing new to Kit Vela. The head women’s soccer coach for UNM, who is in her 13th year as the face of the program, is set to tackle another season with a youthful roster after four consecutive seasons of double-digit wins.
