UNM tastes upset, come up just short

The UNM football team made a spirited effort to almost pull out an upset victory over 17th-ranked Brigham Young University Saturday at University Stadium, but the Cougars made the big plays at the end to get the win 24-20.

Athletes of the Week

Griffin amassed 15 kills, 65 set assists and 17 digs in two matches during the weekend. In a five game match loss versus the University of Wyoming on Saturday, Griffin scored her first career triple-double with 11 kills, 45 set assists and 15 digs.

Burns optimistic about program

Junior Blaire Burns is one of five returning players from last year's UNM volleyball team. She decided to return to the team after former head coach Laurel Brassey Iversen was fired, but six players left the program.

Kelly to get first collegiate start

When sophomore quarterback Casey Kelly leads the UNM football team into battle against the University of Wyoming Saturday, he'll be the fifth different starting quarterback used by the Lobos since the start of the 1999 season.

Sophomores Sandy Lukowski and Tjasa Suvak started the season in impressive fashion and helped the UNM women's tennis team to a successful showing in the Coors Light Lobo Invite during the weekend.

The UNM men's rugby team used a young squad of mostly freshmen and sophomores to beat the El Paso Scorpions 40-12 Saturday at the Albuquerque Sports Stadium.
