Letter: Saudi king's death changes nothing for war-torn Mid East

Editor,

The news has come to us from Arabia that the Saudi King Abdullah has passed away at the age of 90. Back in June 2008, King Abdullah hosted the Mekka interfaith meeting in which he publicly met with Shia clerics and claimed to support the establishment of a more pluralistic and tolerant interpretation of Islam.

That was a time of hope and optimism when many in the Muslim world thought that perhaps the Saudi family’s traditional support for the extremist Wahhabi clerics in Arabia was coming to an end.

Unfortunately, King Abdullah did not act on his words and instead gave his tacit support to unleashing a hellish onslaught throughout the Middle East by aiding Wahhabi extremists in places like Syria, Iraq and Libya.

While I do not mean any disrespect to the dead, I do think that a person’s legacy is built upon the actions they took in their lifetime. The world is still suffering as I write this letter due to groups of brainwashed people who think that Islam is as simple as killing and hatred.

If King Abdullah had been serious and sincere in his claims to be a reformer, he would have used the full force of the state to censure and imprison Wahhabi clerics who teach Muslims to hate and kill without remorse.

The world needs more peace, and King Abdullah had a chance in 2008 to get on the road to peace; but, unfortunately for him and his victims, he chose hatred, extremism and war.

Sincerely,

Muhajir Romero
