Five and Why with Lydia Wolberg

1. “The X-Files”

“It really appeals to my inner nerd. I just love it. It’s an awesome sci-fi. There’s a reason why it ran for so many seasons – because it was universally appealing. I like that it had a strong female character. Scully was a doctor (and) an FBI agent. I think she was really awesome. It has supernatural tendencies with an actual science component – and of course everyone finds government conspiracies a little bit intriguing. The writing is superb.”

2. “The Office” U.S. Version

“That’s like a go-to, universally appealing show, especially in my household. It’s one of the few shows my husband and I can agree on. If we can’t agree what to watch we’ll just put on ‘The Office.’ I can always go back and watch those episodes. It’s so funny. It’s just incredibly well written. Everyone knows a Dwight in their life; everyone has a Michael Scott in their life. I think it really appealed to American office workers who could relate to all that folly you fall into when you work in an office environment.”

3. “30 Rock”

“I think everyone can learn something from Liz Lemon, the (main) character. She was just super hilarious. (It was) written and normally produced by Tina Fey, a really talented comedian and, I think, a really positive role model, especially for young women. Anyone who is into comedy should definitely watch this show.”

4. “The Wire”

“It’s considered one of the greatest shows in television. It was just incredibly well written with very serious subject matter but still really strong characters. It was this nitty-gritty cop drama on HBO that centered around Baltimore, Maryland, which is known for being a high crime area. It was a fascinating show that they shot in real neighborhoods. It’s kind of like the way everyone in Albuquerque rallies around ‘Breaking Bad,’ everyone in Baltimore rallied around ‘The Wire’ because they really felt it was a great show to not necessarily portray their city but to kind of highlight what they have to deal with on a daily basis.”

5. “The Walking Dead”

“That’s a show that I’ve watched since it first came out. It’s just a great show. It’s entertaining – everybody likes to get scared every now and then in a safe environment (like) in your home. I think well of the actors and I think it’s a well-produced show. You can’t go wrong with that makeup; they really do an incredible job. Obviously zombies are never going to happen, but everyone always wonders ‘what would I do if it did happen?’”
