Crime briefs for April 16, 2015

Telephone harassment at the SUB

On April 7, an employee at the Student Union Building received a disturbing voicemail about the Muslims Student Organization event on March 31, which some considered to be a pro-ISIS talk. According to a UNM Police Department report, the recording was of a male voice that cussed at the employee and suggested she kill herself because she invited pro-ISIS people onto campus. The employee does not know who left the voicemail and as far as she knows the University phones do not have caller identification. The report is closed pending further leads.

Identity Theft of UNM Student

On April 6, a UNM police department officer was called in reference to stolen identity. A student told the officer an unknown subject used his personal information to file an IRS tax return. The student said he feels his personal information was stolen within New Mexico. The student and his mother went to file a joint tax return in Texas when it was rejected because someone had used his information to claim the return. The case is closed pending further information.

Criminal Sexual Assault

On April 13, an officer was called out to 1900 Roma Ave. NE where the officer met with a victim who reported being sexually assaulted. The victim was transported to the hospital and the Sexual Misconduct and Assault Response Team detectives were called out. The victim was uncooperative and no further details are available.

Domestic Violence near Campus

On April 8, a UNMPD officer was driving in a marked police unit car when the officer encountered two individuals in the street fighting. According to the report, the suspect who was larger in stature and wearing a tan colored coat was forcing the smaller person into a headlock, and then swung the smaller person around two times. The officer exited the car while both of the individuals were still struggling over a backpack and he noticed liquid spilling out it. After the officer talked with the smaller individual, she said the suspect was drunk and trying to get into the backpack for more alcohol. The suspect had a strong odor of alcohol, slurred speech and had trouble keeping his balance. The officer put the suspect under arrest for Domestic Violence Battery.

Drugs and drug paraphernalia on campus

On April 8, UNMPD was dispatched to 2600 Campus Blvd. NE in reference to drugs. The resident adviser said she was conducting a routine walk when she noticed an odor of marijuana coming from a room. The adviser knocked on the door and a male student admitted he had been smoking marijuana with his brother and had drug paraphernalia in his possession. UNMPD arrived on location for further investigation. The student turned over two plastic bags of marijuana and two pipes. The student was advised of the student code of conduct policy and a report would be sent to the Dean of Students for further action.

Contraband found at Alvarado dorms

On April 10, a resident adviser found ammunition in a dorm room. According to the report, the officer made contact with the adviser and she said the student also had previous administrative issues. The resident adviser went to the dorm room to do a lock out because of the previous problems but when she checked the inside of the room she observed a box of shotgun shells on the counter. The officer tagged the box and shotgun shells for safekeeping.

Theft at Student Family Housing

Two rings and a Google Glass device were stolen from Student Family Housing. One of the reports, states the resident did not notice the device missing but learned about numerous thefts at SFH through media outlets. The resident decided to file a police report because the other thefts seemed consistent to the time frame of the missing device. The other report states the resident did not notice the rings missing until April 4 but was unsure of when the items were stolen. The rings were out of sight in a closet downstairs and upstairs in a jewelry box.

Break-in at track

On April 7, an officer was dispatched to 1800 Avenida Cesar Chavez SE. According to the report, the officer met with a reporting person and he stated he found a cut fence and on the other side of fence he observed a large flat tow dolly. It appeared someone wheeled something on to the location. The officer checked the concession buildings on the north side of the football stadium and the noticed the east doors were open and bent. There was also impact marks on the handles of the several doors and another tow container was located on the north side of the track, which contained cases of Gatorade. It is unknown if anything was stolen from the building and the Athletic Department has not reported anything missing at the time of the report. There are also no suspects or witnesses.
