Column: The Traditions of Homecoming not lost in College

In high school, Homecoming was always something many students looked forward to. The week before Homecoming was an eventful time to celebrate pride in the school and the football team, elect the Homecoming Court and, of course, participate in the Homecoming dance.

These traditions were something that many of us took part in, at least to some degree, and were sad to see end. Well, there’s no need to fret because the University of New Mexico has some wonderful Homecoming traditions as well.

Homecoming week is packed with spirit events, pep rallies and, of course, the Homecoming Football Game. ASUNM, in partnership with the Alumni Association, hosts a myriad of events that change each year based on the theme of Homecoming, as well as many events that are traditions for our campus.

This year, the Homecoming theme is “Live Lobo and Prosper,” based on Star Trek. Both ASUNM and the Alumni Association have worked tirelessly to create a Homecoming week that is filled with events for everyone at UNM, so make sure to check out the schedule and celebrate Homecoming week with your fellow Lobos!

Monday, Oct. 12:

Do you love UNM? Well, stop by the SUB Atrium between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. for ‘I Heart UNM Day’ and show us how much you really love the University of New Mexico. A GPSA Open House at 4 p.m. and the Ph.D. movie showing in the SUB Theater at 6 p.m. will follow.

Tuesday, Oct. 13:

Have you ever seen Star Trek before? If not, head on over to the SUB Atrium at 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m. or 2 p.m. to watch “Star Trek: Into Darkness.” See what our Homecoming theme is all about.

Wednesday, Oct. 14:

We have some incredible candidates running for Homecoming King and Queen this year. In fact, we have 17 of them! On Wednesday, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., you will have your chance to vote for the 2015 King and Queen. Head to the SUB to cast your vote for the ones you believe represent UNM in the best of ways, or log on to MyUNM between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. and utilize the first-ever online voting system. There will also be a photo booth in the SUB Atrium between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., followed by the IFC Cookoff in the SUB Ballrooms at 6 p.m.

Thursday, Oct. 15:

My personal favorite, karaoke, will be taking place in the SUB Atrium from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. This is your chance to get on stage, sing a cover of your favorite Backstreet Boys, Whitney Houston or Sir Mix-A-Lot song, and show UNM the talent we have been missing out on.

Friday, Oct. 16:

The All-Sports Pep Rally will begin at noon sharp in the SUB Atrium. Come cheer on some of our wonderful athletes representing a myriad of sports, as well as watch our Homecoming Court be named. This wonderful pep rally will be followed up by the Lobo Howl, which is the first big night of basketball practice in WisePies Arena aka The Pit. Lobo Howl begins at 6 p.m., and you won’t want to miss it.

Saturday, Oct. 17:

Finally, our entire week comes to fruition with the UNM v. Hawaii football game at University Stadium with kickoff at 5 p.m. Come out and support the Lobos, and at halftime watch as the Homecoming King and Queen of 2015 are officially crowned.

ASUNM Lobo Spirit, Elections Commission, and the Alumni Association all deserve a huge round of applause for their valiant efforts to make this week a great one for the University of New Mexico. Hope to see you all in attendance at the events made for you by your student government! Happy Homecoming!
