Monday on the Street: Funding partisan speakers

Should student fees be used to fund speakers with a political alignment?

Elias Lopez, graduate student, computer engineering

“It’s a student organization, so I don’t see a problem with it being funded (by students). It’s for all students; if every student doesn’t wish to partake in it, that’s their loss. It’s essentially expanding — it’s bringing somebody that’s going to expand their free speech, expand their knowledge base, because they are going to get to hear what somebody else has to say.”

Luis Valbuena Reyes, graduate student, electrical engineering

“It is a good idea that it is funded not by a specific group of students in the University. That is the idea of a university; that all different ideas can occur in a place that is universal. If there is one group that is funding this particular individual to talk and there is another group also funding another individual, then it becomes a problem of interests.”

Ashley Howell, freshman, engineering

“I think it would be more fair if the students had a choice on what the money went to with these groups, rather than just paying it and giving it to them. It’s fair that they’re giving this people the right to come and talk if they want, but I think students should have more input.”

Bianca Avalos, senior, biology

“I think they should consider other people’s opinions. As far as the speaker that came the second week of school, Milo (Yiannopoulos), he was funded completely and I thought that was surprising, because a lot of our students here are against his views. It’s just a difficult situation because everybody has their own opinions and everybody’s not going to agree. For me it’s complicated, but at least an effort should be done to hear people’s voices and acknowledge that they are being heard.”
