UNM hosts exhibit for young artists

Students from public, private and charter schools around New Mexico now have their art on display in the Masley Art Gallery at the University of New Mexico, an exhibit that runs until Dec. 7.

The exhibit gives sixth through 12th graders the opportunity to show their artwork in a professional venue. Students were encouraged to submit works in a variety of different mediums, including drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, graphic design, sculpture, ceramics, mixed media and video.

According to Masley Gallery Director Karen Mazur, student artwork was selected by herself and a group of art educators at UNM. Beginning with around 250 works, the team had to jury the selection down to 85 pieces based on creativity and originality, as well as execution.

“It’s important for the students to have the experience of their work being shown in a professional space, to go through the jurying process and in some cases, learn to handle rejection,” Mazur said.

Awards will be given out to students in each category at the Young Artists Exhibition awards ceremony and reception on Dec. 6 from 6 p.m.to 8 p.m. For many middle and high school students, this event is a way to become acquainted with UNM.

“It’s great to get the students and families through the door because some of them might be potential students,” Mazur said.

Not only is the Young Artists Exhibition a good way for students to become affiliated with the University, it acts as a catalyst for an appreciation of student expression, as well.

“I think showcasing artwork from students is a way for students to show what they love to do and what they are capable of doing,” said Joseline Mendoza, a UNM sophomore. “I am an artist and a dancer and I feel like it’s a great thing, to be able to express… how you are feeling through movement and through art.”

The Masley Gallery is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m..
