Redshirt freshman Alice Wright finished the 6-kilometer race in 20th place with a time of 20 minutes, 29.1 seconds, and senior Charlotte Arter placed 22nd, clocking in at 20:29.9. Both runners earned All-American honors.
Arter became the second back-to-back All-American since Carole Roybal from 1984-86.
Michigan State won the women’s championship with 85 points and Iowa State came second with 147 points. UNM finished with 188 points, just one point less than fourth-place Georgetown.
Kate Avery from Iona took the individual title, finishing with a time of 19:31.6.
UNM’s previous best finish came in 2010, when the team placed fifth.
Also for the Lobos, Callie Thackery placed 43rd (20:48.8), Tamara Armoush was 73rd (21:02.8), Heleene Tambet finished 93rd (21:10.2), Nicola Hood earned 111th place (21:16.2) and Amber Zimmerman was 141st (21:29.9).
Jake Shelley led the men to a 14th-place finish at the NCAAs. He earned 50th place on the 10- kilometer course, coming in at 31:04.7. It’s the eighth top-20 finish for the men.
Elmar Engholm finished in 78th place (31:20.9), Todd Wakefield was 93rd (31:30.0), Ross Matheson earned 119th (31:41.4), Dan Studley placed 131st (31:50.3), Alex Cornwell was 178th (32:12.6), and Matt Bergin did not finish.
Colorado won the team title with 65 points; Stanford came in second with 98 points, and Portland was third with 175 points. Oregon’s Edward Cheserek won back-to-back titles with a time of 30:19.4.
