Bargain books can be found right around the corner, too

Editor,

This letter is in response to Elizabeth Butler's article, "Local Shops Offer Readers Best Bargain Book Options," on April 12.

In the article, two thrift shops, one a used bookstore and two Internet services are mentioned. In Albuquerque, there are 22 used books stores - six of which are within walking distance of UNM - and six dealers, book sellers who operate out of their homes by appointment.

Most of the stores buy, sell and trade books - it's best to call them first - and are happy to respond to telephone inquiries by checking their shelves for the book you need.

If you visit in person and can't locate what you want, many will call around for you to help. At some of the stores, you can ask the nice folks to call you if the title you're looking for comes in.

At all of the shops I've been to, the books are categorized by subject and alphabetized by author within the subject, and unlike Internet sales, shipping is rarely an issue. A list of used bookstores is available at most of them - it's even been provided by the UNM Bookstore.

With World Book Day coming up on April 23, I thought this information might come in handy.
