Editor,
In response to Lucia Fronterotta's letter in Friday's Daily Lobo, I agree that printing can be a problem. But some of the responsibility for the problems must rest with faculty and the students.
Often students will submit the same print job three or more times instead of waiting for the job to come out. Those jobs that you see left on the table are not always because people became tired of waiting, but because people resubmitted the same print job. Waiting until a few minutes before a class is also a common occurrence with students. This causes your anxiety to increase tremendously and you will submit the same job over and over.
Also, faculty used to supply a syllabus for each student, paying for the printing in their own department - now they send the students to the pods to print. This makes for wonderful savings for each department, but adds to the costs for CIRT and the wear and tear on pod printers. Some faculty members also ask for single-sided printing - what a waste this is.
Also, printing out slide shows is a waste of toner, paper and the time to print them out. Slide shows should be converted into text.
Free printing is a luxury that many colleges do not provide, and we are lucky to have that provided here. Think about how much time would be saved in the pods if you were given your syllabus in class.
