Editor,
It is encouraging to see any form of exercise incentive plan, but I found one that is even better - but underutilized. It pays cash to the participants, while saving money for the employer by reducing sick-leave usage and lost productivity. The primary benefit is to the participant, who will feel better and probably live a longer, healthier life.
What is the plan? Ride the bus, walk or bike to work.
All the plan needs is some minor fine tuning. First, the participant must think outside the box. Driving is not the only way to get from one place to another. It creates stress, costs money for fuel and wear and tear - on both vehicle and driver - and you must pay to park. Besides, by the time you find a parking spot, you will probably walk a considerable distance to get to your office.
Riding the bus would give you time to read or at least relax. Walking or biking strengthens your heart, improves circulation and burns calories, not to mention relieving the stress of traffic - and if you drive to work, you are stressed even if you don't feel it.
Don't forget the cash benefits, which include fewer stops for ridiculously priced fuel, less chance for an accident that will raise the cost of your insurance, and if you are dedicated, no parking fee. Take the savings and do something fun. Maybe even eat that one piece of pie that you were afraid to eat before you started exercising.
