Across the street from UNM, a new clothing shop called UNI has more T-shirt designs than any other store in the state, said owner Greg Cook.

"There are 35 different colors, and we have the largest selection of designs in New Mexico," Cook said.

UNI is a unisex clothing store that sells custom-screened shirts and apparel. Cook said UNI can stand for a multitude of things - universal, unisex, you and I. It opened on Aug. 1 and sells clothing brands such as Hanes, Jerzees and its feature brand, Bella. Cook said his prices are for students.

There are sizes for babies 6 months old to adult XXXXL, and the clothing varies from regular T-shirts to thongs and even velour. Other than clothing, UNI also sells shoes, purses and hacky sacks. UNI also provides gift wrapping for all purchases.

Customers can choose from 250 screen designs and 10,000 embroideries. Customers can also bring in a personal screen and UNI will customize its product with a 24-hour turn around. Baseball caps and purses can be embroidered as well.

UNM student Elaine Abrams said she heard about UNI through her friend.

Abrams said the most unique aspect about the store was the selection.

"I liked how there are all different styles of shirts. A lot of places you go to only have one style," she said.

Cook said he is always looking at the newest trends and trying to keep up with them.

"You have to pay attention to the news for trends because trends are what sell. You have to have something for everybody," Cook said.

Trends aren't the only thing that Cook watches carefully, he said. He keeps track of the daily number of shoppers, buyers and the No. 1-selling shirt, which is the long girls' T-shirt. On average, Cook said 30 to 60 people are buying something every day, and there are from 100 to 160 people stepping into the shop.

Cook said he is creating a contest to boost advertising for UNI. Every week there will be a shirt design contest for the public. The creator of the design will bring it in and customers will vote on their favorite design. The winner will win a dozen free shirts with his or her screen on them.
