UNM a textbook example of bureaucratic insanity

Editor,

Who does UNM think it's fooling? I am sick and tired of all the unsatisfactory, illogical excuses that the administration keeps spewing to my fellow students and myself.

What am I enraged about? Here is just one example: paper handouts. On Tuesday, one of my instructors said, "To reduce costs, UNM is limiting the number of things handed out to class. It is now expected that students go online and find these handouts and print them at their own expense." Does the administration at UNM take the student populace for docile imbeciles? How can UNM justify raising tuition by 6.11 percent, cease printing paper schedules - to cut cost, no less - and expect us to print required materials ourselves? It can't, pure and simple.

They say you can't put a price on education. Well, those with the audacity to call themselves the leaders of UNM sure are trying hard. This wouldn't be half as bad if our scholarships increased to counter tuition hikes.

Let me ask a question - does anyone know how to navigate UNM's Web site to find half of the stuff they need? I have no clue how to work the e-reserves, and it's not for a lack of trying on my part. I've spent God knows how many hours looking for my class syllabi.

If UNM really cared about its students, as it claims through its teeth, it would decrease tuition by 15 percent and reinstate paper schedules and handouts. Either that, or it needs to stop the facade and admit its true slogan: "UNM, where we take your money in return for a small chance to get past our gauntlet of bureaucratic insanity. Don't worry, though - we'll increase tuition if you do."
