Editor,
I just wanted to clarify some of the facts regarding the Bookstore's buyback program to eliminate any confusion.
Buyback begins when faculty members give the Bookstore their textbook orders for the next semester. Once we get those orders, we are able to put them on the buyback list.
The breakdown of pricing goes like this: If the cost of a new book is $100, the same used book is discounted 25 percent to $75. If we get an order from a faculty member before buyback starts, we buy it back from the students at half the new price - even if they purchased it used. So, they would get $50. If faculty members use the book several semesters in a row - and place their repeat orders before buyback starts - the amount of the book falls to $25 for the semester, because they would have received $50 for it after
spending $75.
The Bookstore is very conscious of the price of course materials and works very closely with faculty to buy back as many books as possible from the students. Additionally, we recently met with the provost to make this program even better and more effective for students.
